Did Jesus "Prooftext"

just a thought. i have heard people say that you shouldn't prooftext out of the Bible (use an isolated portion of a document to support a doctrine). isn't that exactly what Jesus did when he was tempted by the Devil?

He quoted Deut 8 and then Deut 6 to refuse to perform a miracle and then refused to force the Father to perform a miracle. i give you the last temptation was "in context" as the subject of what Jesus quoted dealt with refusing to worship any god but the God.

genuinely wanting to know if i missed something. i am seeing Jesus did what many call "prooftexting"

Can the Lord proof-text what He Himself has spoken? I think that when you look at the differences between the Lord doing this vs. man, the answer gets clearer.

I believe that the difference is that man has an agenda to accomplish by proof-texting, where as the Lord is informing of His word when/if He does it.

Jesus did not prooftext. I assume that by Prooftext you mean making a new meaning by taking only the part of the text out of context.

Jesus did not do that, based on Luke 4, for the first temptation of converting Stone to bread using the power of God, Jesus answered - “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.’” He did not say the rest like 'but every word that comes from the Mouth of God'. But that does not matter here as it answers the Devil clearly that Jesus was not focused on getting Bread from God.

For the second temptation of Worshiping the Satan by loving the worldly things, Jesus said -‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.’” I think this sentence is complete and answers Satan clearly.

The Third Temptation is :-
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; for it is written,

‘HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,’

and,

‘ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP,
SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.’”

Here Satan has correctly Quoted Psalms 91:11. Nothing wrong in what Satan has quoted here. But Jesus balanced it by saying, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST'. (Deuteronomy 6:16). I believe is is also complete, Jesus did not bring a new meaning to Deuteronomy 6:16.

If a believer just takes one scripture and makes a doctrine out of it then he would have fallen for the Satan when he asked to Jump. It is true that God will Guard us but that does not mean that we will put it to test. Same thing can be applied to new Covenant life as well. It is true that we have eternal life but one should walk according to Spirit not according to Flesh.

A best example of Proof text is Romans 8:1-
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Many people use it to coverup their sinful life styles, but that is not true. The word says clearly that Those who are in Christ Jesus, who are these people who are in Christ?

Romans 8:4-
so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Who fulfill the requirements of Law by walking with the spirit without yielding to Flesh.

appreciate both of your responses. maybe i have a misunderstanding as to what prooftexting is.

here is an example: i have heard some people say that if a text is directed toward preachers, you cannot apply it to the layman. or some might say that the the phrases from Deut are directed at Israel in between their escape from Egypt and their movement into the Canaanite lands, so you can't apply it to today.

it just seems that i have often heard people say that others are taking verses out of context. like they might say "that was God speaking to the Jews, you can't apply that to today." but it seems like this is pretty much what Jesus is doing in this passage.
