At The Cross - Isaac Watts

I
InTheLight Apr 5, 2012

As we approach Good Friday this beautiful hymn comes to mind;

Stanza 1:

Alas! and did my Savior bleed?

And did my Sov'reign die?

Would He devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I?

Chorus :

At the cross, at the cross,

Where I first saw the light,

And the burden of my heart rolled away -

It was there by faith I received my sight,

And now I am happy all the day.

Stanza 2:

Was it for crimes that I have done

He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown!

And love beyond degree!

(Chorus)

Stanza 3:

Well might the sun in darkenss hide

And shut its glories in,

When Christ, the mighty Maker, died

For man the creature's sin.

(Chorus)

Stanza 4:

Thus might I hide my blushing face

While His dear cross appears;

Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,

And melt mine eyes to tears.

(Chorus)

Stanza 5:

But drops of grief can ne'er repay

The debt of love I owe:

Here, Lord, I give myself away -

'Tis all that I can do!

(Chorus)

Thank you, Brother Ron. Yes, this week, songs about the cross keep coming into my mind and what He went through for us, through the words of these great hymns.

I was just struck with the 'Joy' that we should have over what He's done for us, on that cross. I wonder why we don't see as much Joy in the redeemed as there should be.
Brother Greg's posting of this message, brought that thought to me very strongly.

The Joy of The LORD 'is' our strength and the enemy knows that and will send 'joy robbers' or whatever thoughts that keep our minds from The Cross and His Work and what it accomplished for us. Are we not walking in that victory?
A life of victory is a life of joy! As so would be the joy of being in love with this self-sacrificing GOD.

Stanza 5:

But drops of grief can ne'er repay

The debt of love I owe:

Here, Lord, I give myself away -

'Tis all that I can do!

Hope more hymns will be posted about His cross.
Thank you again!

What a wonderful hymn for Good Friday! It is being sung Friday at my church. May God speak to hearts through it.
