Hey, i just want to have someone assist me in trying to figure out what ppl have against Contemporary Christian Music and why it shouldn't be listened to. Jane Doe's (aka, my) opinion on this (though I will provide Scriptual back-up, I promise) is that hymns are amazingly beautiful and an awesome offering of praise to God. The lyrics are descriptive of what I feel toward God, and full of passion and sincerity. However, I see this in some of the music put out by CCM, too. I love modern music. Switchfoot, The Benjamin Gate, Daily Planet, Mercy Me, and Nichole Nordeman are among my favorites. But I pick and choose.I've found that some people have a problem with CCM simply because it's modern and non-traditional. Wesley wrote some of his hymns to the tune of popular songs during his time. That's all I have to say about that.Others have more justifiable contentions. They'll say CCM has become too business-savvy or money-concerned. The artists aren't setting an example of humility; they've let fame get the best of them.I agree.Evanescence is the best example. Out comes this song, "Bring Me To Life," that is so clearly about being Saved! And it's popular in the secular world -- what a witnessing opportunity, for me to turn to my peer and say, "Hey, lemmie tell you what this song means!" And then they go to an interview, drop a billion-and-four f-bombs, and say they're surprised they're topping Christian music charts. (Which is a lie: they were carried by a Christian record label, they thank Jesus on their album, the other songs are clearly Christian-toned though not blatant, and all members are supposedly born-again).That disgusts me. And there are similar stories of Christian music artists who sell-out on Christ.So I pick and choose. I research the band/artist, check out the lyrics, get some feedback from others...THEN I put my money into a CD.Here's my Scriptural basis:Luke 9:23 - some of these artists have become self-consumed and spotlight-hungryTitus 1:16 - Evanescense, for exampleMatthew 5:16 - Dropping the f-bomb (Evanescense), putting down the church (Creed & Project 86), etc...that's not letting your light shine before men. There are responsibilities that come with being a Christian, as there are responsibilities that come with being famous: setting an example and being a role model for others is one of them. MANY CCM artists have failed here.Matthew 10:32-33 - Evanescense, yet again. creed: "We're not a christian band."Proverb 11:22 - Some female CCM artists, including Stacie Orracio, more recently.And OF COURSE, Romans 12:2.Those verses are mostly off the top of my head, but I hope they are along the lines of what you were looking for.Everyone does have their personal convictions. I'm personally strongly against secular entertainment (Buffy included ;-)) because I feel that as a child of God, I'm called to better things than what this world has to offer. Wow, Jeremy...got a laugh out of me early in the morning. ;-)I'm actually trying to find some more "modern" Christian music...mostly 70s and 80s. Does anyone know of any Christian "New Wave" bands? (New Wave is like post-punk from the 80s...comparable to secular artists Duran Duran, A-Ha, Flock of Seagulls, Cyndi Lauper, etc.)
The Altar Boys band is probably the only one you'll find that's worth your time. Most Christian bands in this genre were really untallented. I have a tape of theirs somewhere.
