I don't think there is a quick two-line answer sortta' thing to your question asking, "Is a free conscience for listening for God to direct us, or is it so that we can do as we please?".
Just as the mind cannot function independently when arranging thoughts and feelings, the conscience too cannot function independently when testing and judging those thoughts and feelings. The mind and conscience both function together and within the whole of thoughts and feelings. When a man's conscience sees and discovers something, then he become aware of something. Because of this, man can make proper deliberations and become aware of something.
Conscience is an inner aspect of the "hidden man of the heart". It is the activity to test, to judge, to become aware of something. Man has the ability to search his inner man and arrive at a conclusion, a judgment for himself. This ability is called conscience. When the conscience speaks, a man becomes convinced of something for himself.
We need to detach ourselves from the misconception which has often been taught about conscience; where the soul is speaking to the spirit. A "knowing together" is not so much an affair of the soul on one side and the spirit on the other. Rather, much more together with yourself, a knowing something for yourself. Paul describes this saying, "I am conscious of nothing in myself", (1Cor 4:4).
Soul and spirit together form an inseparable unity; they do not judge each other nor face each other in a so-called conflict of conscience.
The issue that this man was seeking prayer is something best left between him and his fiancee and their God. It was inappropriate for them to be asking others to assume the role of conscience for them ... especially for such a delicate and personal matter.

Can this really be true! The woman is still married? Even if this woman was the victim of an adulterous husband and therefore he himself had become joined to another woman. She would still not have been free to take another man as long as she was bound by the law. Of course there is no content in your post to say she was joined to another man. But she is engaged to another man. This doesn't seem quiet real somehow!
