FALSE PROPHETS, FOREIGN CHARLATANS and GLOBAL DECEPTION by Lee Grady

sermonindex Jun 29, 2012

Chris Oyakhilome, a popular African preacher with questionable
credentials, is sparking international concern.

When I arrived in eastern Europe·a few days ago I learned that
Romanian Christians have quite a spiritual battle on their hands.
Believers here struggled for years under communism. But now
that they are free, they face an equally sinister struggle against
cults, New Age teachings and-worst of all-charlatans who
claim to be powerful Christian prophets.

One of the most controversial figures in Romania today is Chris
Oyakhilome, a Nigerian broadcaster and faith healer who lives in
South Africa. Although this smooth-talking preacher has never
been to Romania, his influence has grown through his TV programs
and books. Meanwhile, some gullible Romanian church leaders
have visited his ministry base in Johannesburg and then returned
to impart his miracle power to their congregations.

But Oyakhilome´s "power" is questionable-and it is spreading
not only in eastern Europe but in many other parts of the world,
including the United States.

You may have never heard of Oyakhilome, but don´t be surprised
if his programs soon appear on a Christian television station near
you. The founder of a movement called Christ Embassy, which
began in Lagos, Nigeria, Oyakhilome already has 16 churches
in the U.S., mostly attracting African immigrants in cities such
as Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. He has 39
churches in the United Kingdom (where many Nigerians live) and
18 in Canada, and his daily devotional books called Rhapsody
of Realities are supposedly available in 70 languages.

Why is he so controversial? Consider a few facts:

Nigerian Christians have long complained that Christ Embassy is
a cult-mainly because members reportedly are forced to give
money in offerings and are pressured to marry only within their
church. Oyakhilome was accused of engineering a money laundering
scheme in Nigeria in 2010, and questions swirl around his finances
because of his glamorous lifestyle.

Theologians and cult-monitoring groups have documented their
concerns about Oyakhilome´s "New Creation" doctrine-a form
of gnosticism that says after a person becomes a Christian, any
sin they commit is only in the body and will not affect the spirit.
Oyakhilome mixes this doctrine with a hybrid version of the
American prosperity gospel, claiming that God wants all people
to be rich.

Oyakhilome´s reputation as a faith healer was tarnished badly in
2008 in Johannesburg when a man told a Soweto newspaper that
Christ Embassy offered him more than $1,200 (U.S.) to sit in a
wheelchair and pretend to be crippled until Oyakhilome prayed
for him. The man went to the media instead of taking the money,
sparking concerns that healings were being faked to impress
growing crowds.

Perhaps most disturbing is Oyakhilome´s connection with T.B.
Joshua, a Nigerian occult healer who leads a mysterious group
called The Synagogue, Church of All Nations. Joshua, who claims
his mother carried him in her womb for 15 months because he
was a special prophet, mixes Pentecostal fervor with pagan
spirituality. After coming under Joshua´s influence a few years
ago, Oyakhilome began copying some of his bizarre mannerisms.
When I came to Romania last week I was surprised to learn how
many Christians here had come under Oyakhilome´s influence.
But as I did further research I found that Oyakhilome´s popularity
is growing far beyond eastern Europe. Thanks to YouTube,
Internet TV channels and a public that is often biblically illiterate,
Christians today are as vulnerable as ever to religious impostors
and deceptive con-artists.

Jude, the brother of Jesus, warned us 2,000 years ago about such
false prophets. "For certain persons have crept in unnoticed ...
ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness
and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ" (Jude 4, NASB).
Paul also warned that people will demand false teachers to fulfill
their lusts, and that those teachers will "turn away their ears from
the truth" (2 Tim. 4:3-4). Those ancient words are painfully relevant today.

Some Romanian church leaders have sounded an alarm. One of
them, Ioan Peia, released a public warning in 2011 listing various
false doctrines promoted by Oyakhilome. Peia urged Romanian
church leaders to "repent and ask God´s forgiveness, and ask the
forgiveness of our brothers, because we allowed a part of these
teachings to be spread among us and through us."

I feel I must sound an alarm as well. As much as I want to see
healing miracles restored to the church today, I´m not willing to
fling open the door to deception. The devil can fake miracles, and
if we don´t apply discernment in this vulnerable hour, impostors
will sneak into the church and unleash their doctrines-with
deadly results. Please don´t be duped by counterfeits.

I saw this same message in another forom in reply below is what i wrote:
Personally I belief this Chris oyakhilome is of Christ , I personally Know friends in our country who are part of that organization who are being deliver from the power of darkness through the instrumentality of that organization. That might not be a perfect proof of one genuineness , but what I speak I speak with my walk with the Lord. Having said that I do not agree with all of his teachings. I know he preaches prosperity, I am not against prosperity by walking with the leading of the holy spirit , in fact the reason why must of us in Africa keep begging aids from western Christians is because most of us do not know how to trust the Lord for the supply of our needs in stead keep relying on the arm of the flesh . If we do not know how to received our needs from the Lord we will become slaves of men. The Lord himself teach me prosperity because in Him I have found something more reliable than bank account. Recently I was talking with my brother about a friends of ours in a certain denomination , we where so sympathetic knowing how he have become a bondage to the system , and he cannot even raise a family though getting older , a word came within me ” if this brother knew what it mean to walk with the holy spirit he will never be in bondage to men or systems ” He do not have to rely on men . It does not mean because once is safe every things is possess. The holy spirit will guide us in things related to Life , His wisdom is needed in all things , yet we must learn to walk in the spirit.. But I also belief there are excess in the way the prosperity teaching is presented , the worst part is when men are told to wish anything and they will get it , that is a walk in the flesh. I know there is a place of degree, but it must be what the Father witness within. Actually what I love about this man is his teachings on Intimacy and devotions are edifying to me. Actually stated listening his message some months ago , I heard about him years ago but was not interested about him because I taught all that he had was miracles and prosperity teachings.
About the hear says and rumors the Lord have personally warned me on rushing into conclusion by just heresay. Will not touch. To those who believe he is false personally I do not condemn any one , we are save by believing in Jesus not in believing or dis believing Chris oyakhilome.

The idea that a man can glorify his own name and enrich himself at the name of Jesus is of course offensive and of itself is false. No such calling exists. If it were to please God and I had the chance to see for myself or witness the falsehood and the wickedness of such a man I would rebuke him publically and ask the Lord to make a judgement unto death. Its time believers stopped making excuses for these charlatans. Regardless that they may have once believed if they cross the line and begin to lord it over the flock they should be prepared to accept a judgement from another saint with the cry "your life or mine! Let God judge".

Guys is the very reason that when you put down the Western Church and hold up churches in other parts of the world as example, I shake my head in disbelief.

I work in Nigeria and spend around 6 months of the year there.

In Nigeria I do see the gospel being preached there but unfortunately it is the prosperity gospel..

Did you know this man? How is he glorifying his name? who told you he us is using the name of Jesus to enrich Himself? Is it the Lord or your own opinion or others? (Bakary)

Brother I have seen men go to the grave and always in these circumstances. Abuse of the flock is a serious matter. I sometimes think that God Himself can stomach a charlatan if he sticks just to money. Even though the love of money is offensive to the Gospel. Unfortunately it is almost never that simple. A person who is willing to deceive in the way testified too in the article has crossed a line. Given that young people and perhaps children read this forum I will spare you some realities.

It is always asked "has God told you" or "who told you". I read the article brother. How do you suppose I made the comment. If you say that the article is false then say so. Just in case you didn't realise it brother God doesn't need to speak for something to be seen. If the article is true this man is a charlatan. The fact that he is a christian simply means that sudden and visible judgment makes certain his being in the Lord's presence and away from the flock.

Money always glorifies men! Big cars etc always glorify men. It isn't difficult to understand. Its the Lord's name we should be concerned with not a man's.

B

murrcolr agree with you must of what is preached is the prosperity thing. In fact I agree with you doctrinal wise Christianity in the west in my opinion is far far far better. Yet I also believe if you do not know what it mean for example to live in extreme hunger and need you may not see the need of people to know how to surreder to the holy spirit dealings even in issue of material life.you might not understand what is going unless you are part of those who seek food to eat and have nothing to eat and have to drink water and sleep. As long as we African do not learn how to trust Christ as our all sufficiency in all things we will ever remain slaves and beggars even to you western Christian in the west. If one submit to Christ he must become your lord in all things this mean he should lead you in the right business, job, etc to earn you living. But in some cases it is preach as " come to christ and all will walk well" without emphasis on relationship to be guided on the way to go.That the excess

B
bakary Jun 29, 2012

armkelly: you are emphasizing money issue , the problem is never what you possess externally but what you possess internally , Gods way are divers He may allow some of His children to be extremely rich just to proof one of his chracter while for others he just takes care of there basic need and that all and this is also to proof another of his character which is the power to give the grace of endurance in all things. Look the scripture and will prove this.
I know that this is one of the organization who prints and give out book for free in our country. You Maybe to know about it and i learn they do that in other countries. I know it does not prove genuiness though

you are emphasizing money issue , the problem is never what you possess externally but what you possess internally (Bakary)

Amen. to what constitutes a real possession. It is Christ in you the hope of glory. Amen

However apart from the free gift of God, a thing which no man can boast in, there is a reality of consequences and out workings which simply cannot be ignored. God Himself will not ignore them and nor should we. Some believers are indeed wealthy. Acts chapter five should sober you up in that regard. More importantly as you have clearly shared, in Africa there is considerable poverty. Nigeria is no exception in this regard. When people are poor the extent that they may be stumbled by the idea of becoming wealthy may be disproportionate. It it makes for a determined outcome. Chiefly such brethren having had there understanding corrupted by western as well as African greed and injustice may not easily work out how to become faithful and trusting in what they have in life. This was you own point. If a man then comes along and offers a way of escape which ends up causing these otherwise lovely brethren to go after money, they themselves may find that they are drawn or even driven to a form of godliness which is merely outward and end up without real substance. Not only this but the man who draws or drives brethren by his teachings becomes rich himself at their expense. This is the nature of a charlatan. One is a stumbling stone the other is to stumble. The stumbling stone causes many to stumble and may easily be dealt with by removing the one who first stumbled.

B
bakary Jun 29, 2012

Armkelly if you will go out of contest then I may not reply. I am talking about a relationship with Christ not a philosophical way of escape. Or are you finding it difficult to understand that the moment Christ become your Lord He must become your Lord in all things ? Do you think he only save us to go to heaven and for material things we keep seeking them in by our own wisdom by living in opportunities and walking in our own wisdom. If you are part of those who seek job by opportunities you may find it difficult to understand where am going. In fact that is worldliness. The truth is we do not enjoy seeing our people suffering , and our learder including Christian begging to the west.Believe me relationship with Christ for Christ is is the holy need for the fulfillment of our spiritual and physical needs. Christ care all, yet it takes relationship to benefit from Him.

murrcolr Jun 29, 2012

Quote: As long as we African do not learn how to trust Christ as our all sufficiency in all things we will ever remain slaves and beggars even to you western Christian in the west.

This is a lesson that we all need to learn "how to trust Christ as our all sufficiency in all things" whatever part of the world we come from.

Quote: you might not understand what is going unless you are part of those who seek food to eat and have nothing to eat and have to drink water and sleep.

I have never had to experience that but being in Africa for the last 10 years, I have seen poverty pain and suffering. I have seen people die because the president of that nation cut off the water supply and cholera out broke out and the local hospitals had two to three in one bed because they were so full... I have seen them carrying water on there heads, I have seen them die, I have seen there tears and it breaks my heart. I love spending time with African people, I love the way they share even though the don't have a lot, I love there simple view of life.

But I hate those that come in the name of God to take advantage of these people. I hate the false gospels that's being preached not only in Africa but around the world that leads astray and destroys lives...

Many in the "West" look to other nations around the world and think it's better there that there is a "Revival" when I find the opposite is true...

I hope that helps clarifies any misunderstanding....

Hi Saints

The problem we have now as believers is failing to do as the Lord commands us in HIs word. We have become dull of hearing, we no longer test the spirits or exercise discernment. It is so sad to see believers fall hook line and sinker for charlatans who profess the name of Christ and suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

Why can we be not like the Bereans who searched the scriptures to verify that the things that Paul taught were true ! The original post gives us and example of a charlatan who is worshipped by his followers and hang on to his teachings. I wonder if he would have such a huge following if he taught death to self, taking up your cross, forsaking all, putting others first, being content with what you have and Loving God with all your heart your soul and your mind.

We sometimes so easily forget what Christ preached. Jesus said " you can not serve God and Mormon".Simply put you can not pursue material
wealth and Love God for where treasures lie there your heart will be also. If a leader is happy to teach people to seek to be better and standout in this world by pursuing worldly recognition and prosperity does this display the heart and mind of Christ. Jesus said to learn from Him " I am humble and gentle in heart, I came to serve. He humbled himself even to the point of death on the cross. Yet the prosperity gospel is so men centered it elevates men above the master!

Saints we seems to forget what deception is. Deception is often the gospel twisted to suit self. That is scripture is twisted to feed your own will rather than the will of God.

Take heed that no one deceives you for the devil transforms himself into an angel of light. He performs great signs and wonders and deceives even the elect. If we do not abide in HIs word we will be deceived. If we
do not ask for discernment we will be deceived.

The false teachers look so good they sound so genuine, they preach from the bible oh how sweet their voices sound and how alluring and spiritual they appear to the undiscerning believer but by God's mercy if we truly
love HIm and immerse ourselves in his word we will soon begin to sense and pick up the ever subtle untruths preached by false prophets under the guise of the gospel.

We shall know them by their fruit. Can a good tree bear bad fruit. Let's
exercise discernment and remain true to the real Gospel of Jesus Christ. When a man preaches

" God gives us his words for the purpose of makings us his word..Do you know YOU ARE GOD'S WORD? When you were born again you were born by the word of God. This means your destiny in the realm of the Spirit is to be THE WORD OF GOD because you were born by the word
of God. It means your nature is of the word and character is of the word."-Chris Oyakhilome

So the man preaches that YOU ARE THE WORD OF GOD! The undiscerning believer now walks around thinking he/she is the word of God. God forbid that we should believe this lie Jesus Is the Word of God not man. Here Chris is elevating fallen man to same level as GOD our creator. Chris is preaching another gospel ,another Jesus and of such we are to mark them avoid them.

First of all you talk about being content , what does the scripture talk of about being content ? Is
It is not having food clothing and shelter ? in a situation where millions hardly have moderate food not to say clothing and shelter what help can your presentation of what you think about the cross give? You talk about forsaking all, if that forsaking mean coming to Christ and give up all earthly possession what will they forsake having nothing externally? I once ask a brother , hope you exercise fasting ? he told me “ I do not have to fast to fast, “because of lack of necessities like food . Poverty , lack have nothing to do with spirituality. Some times ago western leaders or association pass a kind of warning to African leaders that if they banned homosexuality by imprison the convict or punishing them they will cease giving them Aids. Look that big temptation because of poverty, someone indirectly enforcing his laws and ways to another because he is poor. I thank God our president though a Muslim had the muscle to openly speak against it. In fact some of the things western Christian called terrible things like economic crisis , talking about fear of unemployment (while still having food to eat ) are not a strange life to us, since we where born into it. Employment, clothing and shelter are just secondarily in our case we are talking about food issue. You see the west are not responsible for our state , we are responsible of what so ever state we find ourself . The way some nations work until today at least in major cases they can still have enough food to eat , God have given the same responsibility to us and we have no excuse. God never created us to be beggars . In our own wisdom we cannot bring this about but through the lordship of Jesus we will have the power to be responsible for both our spiritual and physical need. The Cross is to die to your own wisdom and ways and live in the wisdom and ways of God , that is how we forsake all . It is internal , it will sure reflect externally even in things related to material things as he lead us for example to forsake that Job and work in that project etc.
You wrote:
“God gives us his words for the purpose of makings us his word..Do you know YOU ARE GOD'S WORD? When you were born again you were born by the word of God. This means your destiny in the realm of the Spirit is to be THE WORD OF GOD because you were born by the word
of God. It means your nature is of the word and character is of the word."-Chris Oyakhilome”
Now I cannot speak much here on Chris oyakhilome because I do not yet heard more on this on his view of the word. What I mean is I have listen to some of his teachings and heard him referring to the scriptures as the Word of God. I hold a different view of the scriptures , I belief they are a light, a reflection of the Word but not the Word itself. So if he believes the scriptures as the word of God and he is now saying we are the word of God , that will mean in another sense we are the scriptures which we can never be. To be the scripture will mean we will never need them again and I have heard him over emphasis reading the scriptures .May be is an increase in light that is changing his view. What you quoted above about Chris , I agree with him. We all know Jesus is the son of God but we are called to grow hundred percent of a son of God, as Jesus was. Not that we will become God, there is a difference between the son and the father. Jesus was both human and God, son and a Father , as I Isaiah said unto us a son is given , and also his name shall be called the everlasting father. It is through Jesus we become sons. Also about the word do you know the scriptures “the good seed are the children of light” what is the seed is it not the word? Who are the children of light is it not the children of God ? The word has both spirit and life , if it is within out heart it will make us become itself . There is a different between knowing the scriptures by head and having the Life that the scripture the speak about in the heart. Even revelation about the word does not mean it is in our hearts. Revelation is like a light that leads to the source. I will also say it that it is the the reveal Word that that must become us , not the unreveal part of the word.So we cannot be hundred percent the Word because there is the unreveal part of it but the one which is reveal we must become 100 percent. So you are right when you say we cannot be the word in one sense yet in another sense I belief you are not right.
Muccolr wrote :”Many in the "West" look to other nations around the world and think it's better there that there is a "Revival" when I find the opposite is true...

Yes I understand your emphasis muccolr, I think it is must easier to gather crouds in places like Africa than the west because I learn the west are very private in nature. You went to Nigeria I learn of a holiness congregation where at least 120,000 people gather weekly. A mere crusades can gather millions. I am not sure if the same happen in the west. I also belief the Lord is having his way in this seemingly small beginnings. Must of this influecial preachers where raise up in the eighties or early nineties, so in my view “Christianity” is just at is beginging to shine out herepublicly. About Ten years ago the word Born again was strange thing in our country in fact I was not even in Christ then but today the light is coming brighter. But to tell you the truth about 95 percent of our populations are still muslims. I belief western Christian have far far better sound teachings , I think it may also relate to there history. I think if we speak of better revival we should look into China from what I read in my view.

How comes the children of light are indentify as the Word? Jesus Christ is the Son of God will it be a blasphemy to called yourself , a son of God? Don’t you read the creation await the manifestations of THE Sons of God? If one is manifested will he not be called a son of God as Jesus was ? is that blasphemy? Hi Bakary

John 6
24 When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus.

25 And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.

27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

30 They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work?

31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

34 Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give
us this bread.

35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

36 But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Brother there are two types of believers those who follow Jesus in Spirit and in truth and those who follow in the flesh. The latter follow Jesus for provision and are earthly minded. False prophets promote earthly mindedness they teach that gaining in this life is godliness.

Jesus called us all to set our minds on things above! He told us not to worry about what we will eat or wear for we are worth more than sparrows! When we set our minds on Christ earthly things lose value in our hearts and thus therefore we learn and become content in whatever situation we find ourselves in. Despite the other gospel preached in Africa that poverty is a curse there are more poor people who are more generous in their giving even though they lack. They would not hesitate to share the little that they have.

God does not despise the poor he provides for them and ministers to their needs accordingly. When charlatans come they will have their followers gauge spirituality by how rich one is therefore showing partiality.Because of this false doctrine the poor man is made to stumble. He then starts to spend his time trying to indentify the cause of his poverty hence he runs around seeking deliverance ministries to cast out the demon of poverty from his life. In essence he is now seeking bread rather than looking unto Jesus , trusting The Lord to provide for his needs. The poor man now believes he is lacking both physically and spiritually because the super rich charlatan boasts about his " blessings, wealth as a sign of his great anointing and therefore a sign of God's seal of approval." Though the poor may have a job, or piece of land to farm on he is no longer content with that he now wants more so he can prove that he is blessed!

This sadly is the fruit of ministries like that of Chris Oyakhilome! He is causing many to stumble! There is a Spirit of truth and a Spirit of error and as believes we are called to test the spirits and believe not every spirit! What I have come to learn is that we can not change people but only God can. Prayer, bible reading, humilty and a teachable spirit will help us to learn from God's word to be able to know his perfect will and we will be able to discern between good and evil!
