Recovery is it a dirty word

I oversee recovery groups at my church. It is an exciting thing to see men and women-recover! I believe the key to recovery is repentance, followed by spiritual growth and claiming your new indenity in Christ. I was at a pastor's conference and talked with a staff member of a large church that oversees caregroups as I do. She told me that they do not use the word recovery anymore( it is life change groups). She did not want to scare people away from her groups because of the negative usage of the word recovery.What do you think?Is recovery the next bad christian word. Is it wrong to use negative words, such as recovery, sin etc.

Jesus wasn't afraid to call a spade a spade.What that woman said smacks of pandering... Recovery is just a word. to be afraid to use it because of any worldly connotations is to bow before a sense of political correctness.

I agree. I don't believe there is an instance in the Word where Jesus ever sympathized with someeone because of their sin. Repentance is definitely the key word but it's the blood of Jesus that sets us free not a self-driven program.The power of the blood is real and it breaks the power of sin. Any sin in my heart that I've tried to break myself has resulted in failure and misery but when it's the blood of Jesus, it's done.

I like the discovery group name. However, they do recovery many things-their relationship with their family, wife, their job, savings, etc.One night the men's group made a list of the things God gave them through their recovery. A discovery list. Why do people get so funny about a name!!! We need to stop watering things down! If people really want to re build there life then a name won't stop them!Within reason of course!!!!!

I believe in scriptural recovery. I worked on both sides of the fence for years. I for one wish more believers were involved in scriptural recovery. I believe in a biblical experience referred to as walking in the light of God in which God progressively reveals the truth about our lives & our heart condition. I believe God not only reveals the real problems behind all of the symptoms in our lives, but also helps us to root those things out of our lives.Waynegetrealwithgod

I agree with you on this one. Any self effort in my life has always resulted in failure. However, it's been my experience that God doesn't deliver us from our friends, but only from our enemies. It's also been my experience from the very beginning that it's all God & none of me. I didn't decide to serve God. He chose me. he drew me. He revealed the truth about my heart & life; & when I yielded to the influence of His new life within me, he began to transform my life.Waynegetrealwithgod
