In my hand right now I have a book that is absolutley fenomal.
Its the best book I have ever read. The bible aint a book its the word of God so its not counted.
I have read 51 pages of the 300 so far and its the best thing I have ever read. THe book I am talking about is J.C Ryles book Holiness.
If you haven read this book you should buy it and read.

I have read three chapters so far and its amazing.

First Chapter is about sin and what is is and how it has effected us.
Second Chapter is about sanctification.
Third Chapter is about holiness

You can listen to a review here on youtube that will hopefully make you run to the online store and get this book.

I remember reading a section of this book ontop of a mountain in Kelowna, BC where my heart yearned to be in heaven, such a holy place! There is much good thought. To balance this book a book like "True Discipleship by William Macdonald" would be a great supplement.

Brothers, not trying to be picky here. But Charles Dickens said the New Testament is the very best book that ever was or ever will be known in the world.

This is particularly born out in restricted nations where believers will risk imprisonment or even their lives to possess a copy of the word of God. I have read moving stories of people in their 80,s who have been believers. They have never owned a copy of God's word. When they get a copy of God's word tears come to their eyes. They will hug and kiss their Bibles.

I just don't think J. C. Ryle can have that same affect on the persecuted. Though he is good. But I find the more I read the New Testament the more I crave of him and his word.

Just my thoughts.

Bearmaster.

Bearmaster, He did preface his post concerning the Bible. We don't have to always "one up" other people.

I'll look for the J C Ryle book. It's funny, because I just finished reading what I thought was the best Christian book last weekend. D L Moody's The Overcoming Life. It is very encouraging and illustrative. My rule concerning books, is that they always come after my being feed by the Bible. Thanks for the post!

Have not heard of "Holiness", but Ryle has another great title called, "The Duties of Parents". Moreso a short read, but definitely worth the effort and time. I am currently in The Pilgrims Progress, once argued to be the most widely read book next to Scripture. kjcword, your post is encouraging, as I sometimes put Scripture first, and sometimes do not. More often than that, I will spend too much time in literature other than God's Word.

Dvndsn- It does take me alot longer to finish books that way, so I try to make sure that whatever book I'm reading is impactful! I also got very convicted about my worship music collection that keeps growing. I heard of an evangelist from the Azuza Street revival had said that he saw a day coming in America, when the church would no longer Pray to the one that they Praise. I think Keith Green has a sermon to that effect also, which goes into the difference between Praise and Worship.

Saw Ryle's book on Amazon for $9.99. Think I might just order it! Thanks for the post again!

Quote from the Book
"Faith Told Moses that affliction and suffering were not real evils. They were the school of God in Which He trains the children of grace for Glory:....The furnance which burns away the dross;the knife which cut the ties that bind us to the world." Holiness pg 170 Ryle
again enjoy the book its full of Scripture

I want to thank you all for recommending this book that I have never read before.

I went to the online website to access the book and found some real treasures just from the little that I have read so far. I am looking forward to getting deeper into the book as time allows.

I am reading another one of his books called "Knots United"
It is a great book which tries to explain different aspects of the Christian Faith ( The Church, worship, Confession, Regeneration, The Lord's Supper)..though Ryle was a Bishop of the Church of England, He was a follower of Christ first and Bishop Second..

a great Tract he wrote was a call to Prayer, which you can read here
