God is the Shield of His people
2 Sam. 22:3
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence
Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my shield…
Psalm 84:9
Behold, O God our shield…
God is the shield and buckler of those who trust in Him. A shield is a broad piece of metal carried by soldiers in former time as a protection from the arrows and spears of the enemies.
He is their protective cover, armor-plates and bullet-proof vest. He sees the deadly blows and poisoned arrows and fatal bullets that their demonic enemies aim at them and protects them. God shields His people from the spears flung at them by the devil in form of diverse dangers.
The notable Nigerian prophet, Evangelist Babajide, told of a vision he saw one time. In the vision he saw an ant crawling along, followed by a lizard that opened its mouth to swallow the ant. A scorpion caught up with the lizard and stung it before it could swallow the ant. The lizard was paralyzed. While it writhed with pain, the ant walked away unharmed and unaware of the battle that had taken place on its behalf.
The ant represents the people of God who go about their duties innocently. The lizard represents the devil and his cohorts of hell who are always trying to harm God’s people. The scorpion stands for the powerful angels of God assigned to protect the people of God.
God shields his people from the power of the enemy. He protects them from hellish forces. He delivers them from the power of darkness
Col.1:13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son
God is the refuge of his people
Psalm 71:7
I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge.
Psalm142:5
I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.
God is the Refuge of His people
Refuge is a place that provides protection or shelter from danger. In this God we can find refuge from the storm of life. We should come to him in times of troubles and problems and dangers, trusting in Him for deliverance and protection.
A nuclear Bomb Shelter is a physical refuge from nuclear bomb attack. A nuclear Bomb Shelter is an underground enclosed space specially designed to protect and shield the occupants from nuclear bomb blast wave and the radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion. A fallout shelter is designed to allow its occupants to reduce to the minimum exposure to harmful fallout until radioactivity has decayed to a safer level.
God is likened to nuclear bomb shelter in Isaiah 25:4, 'For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.'
The people of God should trust in his protective and delivering power – 2 Samuel 22:3. They should not fear and be anxious when they get into unpleasant or dangerous situation - Psalm 27:3, Isaiah 1:10.
The people of the world should make God, and only God, their refuge - Psalm 91:9-13. Many people in their unbelief look around for other beings and things that they can rely upon as shield and refuge. They make God only one of the shields and refuges in which they trust, rendering themselves unqualified for God’s protection and caring.
