Adultery

L
Lee500 Aug 14, 2012

A couple of months ago, my friend and I had a controvercial topic in reference to adultery. She stated that if a man/or a woman has relationships with a man/or a woman who commits adultery has also committed adultery. I told her how can that be when that person isn't married? How can a person commit adultery if their not married, she said because they had sexual relationships with someone who was married. I did read every verse in the Bible pertaining to adultery and I couldn't find a verse stating that if you lay with a married man/woman that is married you commit adultery too.
Today my friend called me and mentioned it again. I told her that I would go onto Sermon Index and get others opinions in response to adultery.

This is the new covenant standard,

Matthew 5-28-
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Even before sleeping with another Women/Man not married to the concerned person, just entertaining the thought is good enough to be guilty of Adultery. New Covenant is internal purity, if your heart is pure your actions will also be pure. The standard of New covenant is much higher because the grace and gifts are also higher. Under old covenant a person cannot be filled with Spirit, Holy Spirit was only upon them. But in New Covenant the Holy Spirit can live inside us (because of the sacrifice of Jesus) producing God's standard inside us.

Take a look at the Websters dictionary :

ADULTERY:
voluntary sexual intercourse between A married person and someone OTHER than his or her lawful spouse.

FORNICATION :
sexual intercourse between unmarried persons

============================================

ADULTERY.. It does not say between married persons
( however , if both parties are married, but not to each other, are engaged in sexual intercourse , yes this is also adultery )

Luke 16:18
King James Version (KJV)
18 Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.

The question that I am asking is if a married man has relation with an unmarried woman does that make her an adulter?

I know what committing adultery is if a married man or woman sleeps with some one else. My question is, is the other person an adulter too and that person isn't married?

My friend says that the person is consider an adultery even if she or he isn't married because that person slept with a married woman or man.

I disagree, I told her that the person is a fornicator because that person isn't married.

4gvn-or-4gtn stated it well, and the verse that she quoted is quite clear to your question on the official definition, if you will.

Either way though, no matter what the "technical" definition is, both are serious sin.

The question that I am asking is if a married man has relation with an unmarried woman does that make her an adulter?
...
YES, she is committing adultery ( therefore yes, she is an adulterer as well as the man )
..

I know what committing adultery is if a married man or woman sleeps with some one else. My question is, is the other person an adulter too and that person isn't married?

..
YES
...

My friend says that the person is consider an adultery even if she or he isn't married because that person slept with a married woman or man.

your friend is correct...

I disagree, I told her that the person is a fornicator because that person isn't married.

Your Incorrect, Fornication is ONLY between 2 unmarried people ... ( see my previous reply...the definition for fornication DOES NOT mean sexual intercourse between one married and one unmarried person. it is between two unmarried people

( this doesnt not mean unmarried to each other... this means both people ARE unmarried PERIOD ... NEITHER one of them has ever been married to anyone( single, never had a wedding ceremony, no courthouse wedding...NO rings and no "I Do" covenant EVER )

I hope this helps .

I would think according to scripture that the person that is married committed adultery and the the one that isn't married is in fornication. It takes two to tango, they are both committing sin. Romans 1:18-32, has a list of the type of sins people commit that will exclude them from inheriting the Kingdom of God unless they repent of their sins and that only comes through Blood of Christ.

Hope this helps.

all due respect sonsigns
you stated :

The definition of fornication is sexual intercourse between two unmarried persons the "unmarried" does not imply
not married to each other

Webster's Dictionary

Unmarried :
Not married; having no spouse. One who is not married single, unattached, unwed, unwedded

Therefore fornication can ONLY be between single people (unmarried)

"And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." (Leviticus 20:10)

The man who has relations with his neighbor's wife is called an adulterer regardless of his marital status. No reason this wouldn't be true of a woman with a married man also.

Why the splitting of hairs of this question?

The bottom line is that the only person scripture allows (and commands you to do so!) a person to have sex with is your spouse.

Sexual relationships between any others or creature is sin. You can call it whatever you will it is still sin.

Anyhow, sex was made for the pleasure of humans by God that results in children. Without the pleasure factor I would guess none of us would exist. You misuse it and you sin profoundly...not only against your partner but also against God! He is the one you should fear! Since he is the Creator, he makes the rules on how things should be done and we do well to heed it.

Back to the OP - I am wondering is it possible someone is working to justify immorality? Working to find a loophole that one can slip through and still be righteous?

Other then murder, I do not know of any sin that evokes such serious consequences as immorality. Think of all the repercussions of it:
1. Disease
2. Broken relationships
3. Anger
4. Trust destroyed
5. Unwanted children
5. Dooms most women to poverty.
6. Loneliness

These feelings are - I would guess - among the most intense of all...and they are harmful to the body, soul and spirit. They will damm you to the pit unless there is repentance and forsaking of sin. To think one can participate and later repent comes from the pit, too. Tell your friend that playing with fire is less dangerous then playing with sexual sin!

what a waste of time. this is just a semantics dance. if shes fornicating or adultrous both are sins. is sum1 really going to stand before God and "i may have been a fornicator but at least i didnt commit adultry". according to christians the end result will be the same: hell.

Actually both of the things you mention are sin according to GOD and according to "HIM" this sin. Those who continue to live in and do not repent of this self pleasing way of living are according to GODS WORD deserving of the punishment and suffering in hell. Those who make up HIS body of believers, Christians, are just sharing the same truths that have been shared with them when the came to know JESUS. Those who choose to live in rebellion to GOD will suffer the consequences according to GOD.

words do matter :)

Almost every version I looked up for john 8 verse 3 & 4 states...

**The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been CAUGHT IN ADULTERY, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery.**

It doesn’t say she was married but she was still considered “caught in the act of adultery.”

Yes you are right both are sin and have a deadly consequence but you said it was according to Christians that it is sin...they are both sin with the same consequence but who determines that it is sin matters a great deal. Its not because we as believers call it sin its because the most HOLY GOD calls it sin :)

Just commenting on the last part of your post was all. So as not to be off topic though, I found also after reading that both are guilty of adultery according to GOD :)

Be blessed and have a great day everyone

Ginnyrose, the hair-splitting and questions only come because folks don't do 'word studies' anymore or make use of what's out there to answer their own questions.
On page one - the word "fornication" [defined] in both the O.T. and New also includes "adultery".

It took two minutes to get that answer here http://www.e-sword.net/ - on a free Bible Program that everyone should 'download' for themselves.

I have a few expensive programs but it seems I use the e-sword the most. The Journal Notes and Study Notes Section are very convienent.
That one can get so much from one Bible Program is something that no one should pass up. One doesn't need to be online to use it for Bible Studies and Questions.

GOD 'Bless' Rick Meyers!

GOD Bless you as well!

Thank you all for your help, I will tell my friend that she is right and you all are right, Sin is sin, no sin is greater than the next. The most important thing is to repent and never look back and God will forgive you. God bless you all.

For sure! There are so many awesome study tools available for free on there as well. www.biblesupport.com has hundreds of free resources, books, and materials that can be added onto e-sword as well. Really fantastic study tool.
