What first comes to me is that he just simply means be ready at all times, regardless if you feel as though you are on a mountain or in a valley.

If we do only what we feel inclined to do, some of us would do nothing for ever and ever. There are unemployables in the spiritual domain, spiritually decrepit people, who refuse to do anything unless they are supernaturally inspired. The proof that we are rightly related to God is that we do our best whether we feel inspired or not.One of the great snares of the Christian worker is to make a fetish of his rare moments. When the spirit of God gives you a time of inspiration and insight, you say—“Now I will always be like this for God.” No, you will not, God will take care you are not. Those times are the gift of God entirely. You cannot give them to yourself when you choose. If you say you will only be at your best, you become an intolerable drag on God; you will never do anything unless God keeps you consciously inspired. Yes, excellent insight from Oswald Chambers, thanks Ron.To expand upon that, whereever the gospel is preached, it is to be done in the spirit of Mary Magdelene who poured out her most precious ointment on the head of Jesus. The disciples said this was a waste but Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached she will be remembered for this. She "wasted" herself on Jesus and this is the pattern for those who preach the gospel. Nothing is "too much" for Jesus. When we waste ourselves on Him we serve Him out of simple devotion,not because we get satisfaction out of it. Sometimes service may be a great satisfaction(in season), sometimes it may not(out of season). Either way, the child of God "wastes" himself on Jesus simply because it satisfies Him.In Christ,Ron
