Mississippi May Become First Abortion-Free State as Hospitals Refuse Last Abortion Facility

Mississippi is poised to become the first abortion-free state in the nation as the last remaining abortion facility within its borders reports that it is having difficulty complying with the law.

Earlier this year, lawmakers in Mississippi passed a regulation that requires abortion facilities in the state to have board certification and obtain admitting privileges. The latter requirement, which allows abortionists to send women that are injured during an abortion to local hospitals for further treatment, was said to serve as a safeguard to protect women that need critical medical care.

After the bill was signed into law, Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the last abortion facility in the state, filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block the requirements. While this possibility is commendable it does not tell us the whole story.

Single motherhood has lost its stigma among Mississippians, most notably in the black community. In fact, many singles aspire to motherhood sans a husband. They do not want a man around. So then, today out-of-wedlock pregnancies account for more than 55 percent of babies born in Mississippi, the majority being black.

While Missippi may not have an abortion clinic they do exist not far from our state lines in cities like Tuscaloosa, a mere 30 miles from MS.

The problem in MS is not abortion it is being hardened to the gospel that includes repentance from sin. Many know what they should do but believe they are so good God will not send them to hell OR they know they are headed that way but are not motivated to do what needs to be done to change their course. They do not care.

If anyone wants to find a mission field to minister know that MS is one but it is very resistant to the Gospel that includes repentance.

Interesting story.

After reading the comments here I did some fact checking and with a little digging pulled up some statistics for more perspective.

According to the US Census 2012 statistical abstract there were 2270 abortions in the state of Mississippi in 2008 or 4.6 per 1000 women(ages 15-44 note the same age range applies for all subsequent rates per 1000). That is low compared to say Pennsylvania where the number was 41,000, or 17 per 1000 women, and staggerly low compared to New York where the number was 153,110, or 37.6 per 1000. In fact Mississippi had the lowest abortion rate in the country, besides Wyoming where the rate per 1000 women was just under 1%.

As for race, the same Census report has the abortion rate for white women at 13.8 per 1000 in 2007 and 48.2 per 1000 among black women(3.5 times higher) and 21.6 per 1000 among others.

Abort73.com had some interesting statistics as well, which fell pretty close to what I found quickly at the US Census site.

They said for instance that:

•Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended; about 4 in 10 of these are terminated by abortion. Twenty-two percent of all U.S. pregnancies end in abortion. (AGI).

•In 2009, 85% of all abortions were performed on unmarried women (CDC).

•50% of U.S. women obtaining abortions are younger than 25; women aged 20-24 obtain 33% of all U.S. abortions and teenagers obtain 17% (AGI).

•In 2009, adolescents under 15 years obtained .05% of all abortions, but had the highest abortion ratio, 785 abortions for every 1,000 live births (CDC).

(NOTE: that may seem like a small number untill you consider that 5% of 1,200,000 is 60,000.)

•37% of women obtaining abortions identify themselves as Protestant, and 28% identify themselves as Catholic (AGI).

•At current rates, nearly one-third of American women will have an abortion (AGI).
