Thessaloniki court hands ex-mayor life sentence over embezzlement

A Thessaloniki criminal court on Wednesday ruled that the city's former mayor, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, is guilty of embezzling almost 18 million euros from municipal coffers over the course of his two terms in office, handing him a sentence of life in prison.

Mayor Papageorgopoulos won two medals at the European Indoor Championships as well as the bronze medal in the 100 meters at the 1971 European Championships in Athletics. He practiced dentistry until 1981, when he was elected as a member of the Greek Parliament.

Nice post, it give hope of some justice this side of teh great white throne judgement, there are other countries that immediately spring to mind that would be good to see judgement on, however....
