Hey All,

So I heard a sermon on the cross today. It was really insightful it talked about how each step of the cross that Jesus went through was so that He could take on the suffering we have as a result of sin.

She talked about the loneliness of Christ, the wrongful condemnation of Christ, the lashes to heal us of our physical infirmities and disease.

Onething that struck me was this:
That Jesus was brutally rapped and abuse.
The pastor said that during the flogging and mocking it was customary for the person being crucified to be sexually abused while they were being beaten. She there are many historical documents of this and that it is well proven by scholars who have studied Roman Crucifixion.

She linked it to the verse:
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Heb 4:15

She then went on to state that Jesus experienced everything a human could possibly experienced as a result of sin, abuse, loneliness, condemnation, accusation and even sexual abuse, He is able to relate to all of it and He took all of it on the cross for us so that we might be healed from it.

Wanted thoughts on this as my friend who is a zealous Christian was very offended and demanded she stop because it was heretcal

It is an interesting fact that there has only ever been on piece of physical evidence that crucifixion actually existed apart from historical documents and of course the only truly reliable account, that of Scripture. This was when a few bones were found in a "bone-Box" in Israel in the 1970's.

In contrast to this remarkable lack of physical evidence to point to the grim nature of crucifixion believers have taken to painting the most grim and blackest, grotesque and offensive account of the Lord' death imaginable.

This teaching you have spoken of here seems to fit with that desire most perfectly. Whenever I have heard this way of presenting the death of Christ it has always been in the context of seeking to paint the most dreadful picture by way of contrasting the most perfect outcome. This is always in the context of physical healing, or else the healing of emotions. Yet Scripture clearly shows that Jesus showed distress only twice during the ordeal of His death. Once at the beginning in the garden and finally at the very end of it on the cross. Nothing else is revealed about the Lord personal responses and "feelings" physical or otherwise in the Scripture. I too would have asked the women to be silent at the point I realised what she was going to say. If not I would have walked out without hesitation or remorse. It is offensive and it is a deception in that its ambition is an adding to Scripture that which Scripture does not teach or show. In contrast we are told that the Lord suffered and died. We are told that no bone was broken in His body, according to prophecy. It is to put Christ to an humiliation which is unwarranted and offensive.

Lastly, it doesn't surprise me in the least.

My thoughts on this macabre interpretation are that she is deceived.

Jesus was punished for our sins, and the horror of the cross was not in the pain/torture/suffering, but in the Sinless one being made sin and bearing God's wrath in our stead.

Maybe we can change the title?

Alarms go off for me when I read words like -
"a sermon .... she talked",
"The pastor (she) said",
"She linked it to the verse"

this is very twisted.

the first sign that there is sumthing wrong is this is a sermon by a woman. a woman with a twisted and warped interpretation of scripture.

this is sick.

i think if it were sumthing that we should know about then the bible would tell us. but to take a verse like the 1 this 'woman' preacher did and go way beyond what the verse says 2 the point where jesus is being raped and sexually abused is not just outrageous, but i consider it to be blasphemous. its repulsive.

the logic she uses duznt even make sense. 2 say jesus experienced everything we experience and use that 2 say he must have been raped isnt logical. did jesus also experience an abortion, and all the emotional trauma that goes along with that? did jesus experience cocaine addiction? did jesus experience fatherhood? did he have a family? did jesus experience romantic love? did jesus experience marriage? did jesus experience mental retardation? on and on.

obviously the answer to each one is "no". so that verse can not possibly be interpreted to mean that he experienced every single thing human beings experienced.

on top of that, i have never read anywhere that rape or sodomy was part of the crucifixtion expereince. this is a totally new thing. what duz this woman preacher site as her source for this thought?

Absolute human intelligence in display here. Anyone can give a sermon with little bit of intelligence to read and understand the Bible. I am sure this is not a revelation. This Preacher has done some research on crucifixion and based on some cases of crucified people being raped she came up with this Brilliant idea. Later she is using this above quoted scripture as a proof. Basically she wanted to get people more involved and sympathies Jesus by using human intelligence.

Heb 4:15 tells us a wonderful truth that Jesus was in the likeness of our human flesh and was tempted in all things like us, yet without sin. This should give us Hope that we can also live such a life. To be tempted does not mean to be raped. To be tempted means to be tempted to lust with his eyes, to be tempted to get angry, to be tempted to walk in flesh etc.
