Conviction - what convicts you?

I went to church last night and he subject matter was 'He said what?'. The church is doing a series on the hard sayings of Jesus. MARK 1:16-20 was the platform on this but the pastor jumped around to other verses in the same chapter. There were 4 things the pastor said we needed to do follow Jesus and the first one was read His word. Well, 15 minutes into this sermon I began losing some interest. It seemed too simply or something for me.

When it was over the pastor's wife got up to close and she said that this message convicted her. I was dumbfounded and asked myself 'How can that message convict anyone?' She is a youth pastor to 9-12 year olds. She mentioned growing up she was taught about conviction but as she got older she understood going from conviction to contrition

I left that message wonder if the message was really something very watered down, or did I just not get much out of it OR what does it really take to convict me in the end. The pastor is a different pastor from the regular Sunday church. This guy is a stay at home dad while his wife works.

What convicts me the Holy Spirit, I felt intense sorrow for my sins I wept so much I was exhausted.

It is easy to say the Holy Spirit convicts you but I asking beyond that. Are you easily convicted in church? By messages? Do you get convicted to easily to the point that you build a fence around yourself without realizing so that you won't allow yourself to do much of anything?

I don't find myself convicted easily but my context is within the church. I don't know why unless, mentally, I have heard it all before and my mind throws it away? I find things too predictable anymore and the Holy Spirit isn't predictable. The Holy Spirit is like the wind which isn't predictable.

I wondered if anyone is living in a similar situation?

Even last week, the associate pastor's wife said she was very convicted by the message her husband gave and I was really dumbfounded. I found it too basic, too simple and nothing to grow on in me? I am either too callous inside or need deeper messages?

I think I understand your question. To me when I go to Church I do not expect to hear something new. Instead I make sure I stay with Humble heart that acknowledges my need for God's word, so that the Holy Spirit has complete authority to teach me. I have done the mistake of going to Church thinking I know God's word and I want to hear something new to add to what I already have and I have got no revelation from the sermon. But when I go with Humble heart, I get revelation from the sermon which I also share to encourage the Church.

Same thing with God's word as well, I get new revelation out of scripture that I have read so many times before. In short it depends on the need in our heart.

I don't necessarily expect to hear something new as well, but I do want to hear something convicting. Make me uneasy a bit inside.

I keep thinking about the associate pastor's wife and how she said she felt convicted on her husbands message but it wasn't enough to be convicted. A soul needs contrition. I found that good but I couldn't out how I found the message dull and yet she found it convicting. She is a youth leader to ages 9-12 year olds and is a former beauty pageant winner in Oklahoma.
