And Unless You Repent

sermonindex Apr 16, 2013

As many of us are horrified and gripped by the tragedy of Boston I found my self asking not "Why" but "What" is God saying to us in the midst of this tragedy?

This morning God brought the answer to me in Luke 13:1-8. It seems Luke is referencing two tragedies that occurred during the ministry of Jesus. One tragedy was done by Pilot. He had some Galileans executed and spilled their blood in their sacrifices. The other tragedy was the tower (sound familiar) of Siloan that fell and killed 18 people. In both of these tragedies Jesus states....Unless you repent you will all perish.

Very few got the message on 9/11/01. Indeed to even suggest that the twin towers that fell was God's judgement calling forth repentence would invite reproach by others. Even Christians would say how can one be so insensitive to say God is judging over 3000 lives that were lost. Certainly he can tell us to repent by other means.

Here we are over 12 years later. After judgements in the form of weather, economic downturns, school shootings, etc. this nation still remains defiant. The church is still asleep. We still have not gotten it.

Yes, we do grieve and pray for those affected by the horror of Boston. And we pray for those responsible be brought to justice.

But saints let us pray that God awaken the remnant in Boston and around the country to a repentence of personal sin and turning to faith in Jesus Christ.

We must be the one to beat our breast and cry God have mercy on me a sinner. It is ultimately our fault those bombs went off in Boston. We, the church, have been silent as sin has dominated the nation. We, the church, have been so consumed by our own self centered absorbion. We have failed to repent. And God has so judged.

The message of Boston is....unless you repent you will all perish....But somehow that message will be lost just as 9/11 was lost. And the church will still sleep. And the church will perish.

I can not agree with you in this statement, I consider it a terrible and false statement to lay against the Church. It is not the Churches fault that those bombs went off yesterday anymore then it is the Churches fault that the early Christians and disciples were martyred and put to death by Nero. There is sin in the world and sin breeds hate and what you saw in Boston was the result of sin, hate, and darkness in the world not the fault of the Church, the true body of CHRIST.

Edit: One last thought, there are many sitting in churches around this country playing at religion; we all know they are lost. There are also those who are the true body of CHRIST in some of those churches as well that do pray day and night for the lost. Please be careful to distinguish the difference between those who truly are the CHURCH and those who just play religion on Sunday. There are those who make up the body of true believers and who do seek HIS KINGDOM daily in prayer and service to HIM. Just think before you lay these kinds of accusations down at the feet of HIS beloved bride that your not confusing worldly religion with those HE calls HIS own.

Dear sister you say it is sin that breeds hate that caused the bombs to go off in Boston. Agreed. And had the evangelical church been about the task of preaching the saving message of Jesus Christ those bombs may never have gone off.

Judgement begins with the household of God. It begins with the church. We are the one's that have been entrusted with the task of living and proclaiming the gospel. And we have failed.

The American evangical church is embroiled in a self absorbed narcissm that has dulled her to the sinners around her. We are the ones who have been entrusted with the light of Jesus Christ to this nation and to this world. Yet we have failed to be the light. We have failed to live and proclaim his gospel. That is why ultimately 9/11 and Boston must be our responsibility. This is why the church in America must repent. We must repent of not living and proclaiming the gospel.

We know 9/11 was the work of Islamic terrorist. Assuming these bombs that went off in Boston were the same then Brother Andrew's statement is true. If we do not go to the Moslems with the gospel of Jesus. Then they will come back to us in judgement as terrorists.

Greetings Bear
I do understand what your heart is about with what you shared and I do agree we must be diligent to be in prayer but let us just be careful that we do not lay the blame for the work of the enemy at the CHURCHES door step. There are many believers who love the LORD dearly and do fast and pray for the lost and for this country and other countries all around the world to see their need for JESUS...and yet the world marches on in sin and darkness because the enemy and mas desire to be LORD of himself. As JESUS disciples we are called to share the gospel and yes I believe pray for the lost but the rest of the job belongs to the HOLY SPIRIT. The CHURCH can and should pray but the world will go its way, its already been determined to be so...yesterdays sinful acts were not the fault of the CHURCH any more then the persecution of the Believers in China, Iran, ect. is a fault of the CHURCH. What you describe in your last post to me is not the true CHURCH of JESUS CHRIST. There are many in America who are deceived into thinking they are followers of CHRIST but bare no fruit. I think the True CHURCH in this country is a whole lot smaller but they do pray, fast, and share the gospel. Their lives reflect it and to them walking with the LORD is daily not just on Sunday. But still the world will go its way, man has the freedom to continue on in sin and that is the desire of many hearts in this country and around the world, to live for self.

God bless

"Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you."

"Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall."

"We have lost even the difference, the sense of the difference, between that which is sacred and that which is profane. I believe that God could lay at the door of the church the full responsibility for the present condition of the world. And the things over which we cluck our tongues and point our fingers and look distain down our noses about are the things which can be attributed to us for we have not established in the earth a standard and an alternative to which a dying world might have turned. They simply did not know that there is such a thing as that which is holy and that which is sacred. For we ourselves are wallowing in the things that are earthly, common, unclean, and profane. The only alternative to that which is earthly, carnal, sensual and devilish is that which is heavenly. And there is no way to attain to that which is heavenly independent of the cross of Christ Jesus" (Art Katz).

"I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one" (Ez. 22:30).

"He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him" (John 1:11).

"At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; may it not be counted against them."

“And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all" (Luke 17).

"Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart."

"And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”"

Message to Thyatira

18“And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write:
The Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet are like burnished bronze, says this:

19‘I know your deeds, and your love and faith and service and perseverance, and that your deeds of late are greater than at first. 20‘But I have this against you, that you tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21‘I gave her time to repent, and she does not want to repent of her immorality. 22‘Behold, I will throw her on a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of her deeds. 23‘And I will kill her children with pestilence, and all the churches will know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts; and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds. 24‘But I say to you, the rest who are in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not known the deep things of Satan, as they call them—I place no other burden on you. 25‘Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come. 26‘He who overcomes, and he who keeps My deeds until the end, TO HIM I WILL GIVE AUTHORITY OVER THE NATIONS; 27AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN TO PIECES, as I also have received authority from My Father; 28and I will give him the morning star. 29‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

What happen to the church in Thyatira? What has happened and will happen to the church in the U.S.A., if they do not repent? Have we fulfilled God's perfect will when saying to Peter: "That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." The rock of course being Christ, not Peter. As are beloved Paul has told us: "According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

The inspired Apostle Peter wrote to the Church: "The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance."

"‘Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent. ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. ‘He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. ‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
