How to initiate a conversation on the gospel

R
romanchog Apr 18, 2013

I am generally shy and not very good at starting conversations. My husband was quite the opposite. He could strike a conversation with anyone and always bring it to the gospel. I don't know if this is an inherent difference in personalities or just being more full of Christ?

I have physical therapy twice a week and so far have had only two very short conversations with my therapist that didn't go anywhere. My husband would have preached to everyone in that place, including the patients, and no one would even have been offended! I don't know how he did it.

If anyone can give me pointers as to how to bring the subject of Christ into a conversation with someone I would appreciate it. I have been praying about this for a while. I tried to just say something but it fell flat.

Hi romanchog,

This is a wounderful topic for discussion.

This is the best sermon that I have ever heard on this topic, I would highly recommend it:

(Guidelines for Winning Souls) The Effective Use of Questions by Denny Kenaston

I listened to this sermon and it was very useful.

I wonder if others have their own experiences to add to this.

One thing you don't want to do is force the issue. It needs to flow from you. If you really want to witness to your therapist then look for something in your life to strike up a conversation about that has Jesus in it. Maybe reminise about something but in the process be atuned to whether your therapist is open to it as well.

I agree completely.

It has to flow from the heart and spirit naturally, not forced.

You said your husband did it all the time....maybe you can think back and analyze how he did it. This should give you a clue.

Just to illustrate - I hate to toot my own horn, but hope it will give you an insight to what we are talking about.

A week ago I attended a grilling competition to help our son sell homemade ice cream. A staff member assisted me in parking my van, then took me to the stand with his golf cart. In riding with him he complemented on my dress - kind of blew me away - but it was colorful and I love color. So I latched onto 'color'. I talked about color - how beautiful it is and how God made it - notice the trees and the different hues, etc...The young man said nothing but upon leaving he told my son that if I need a ride back to let him know! Strange? Maybe, but this is what I felt led to share... It is not hard to bring God into the picture when you are very aware of His presence in nature, in life happenings. Like the tornadoes we have here - people readily talk about divine protection, God's judgement upon the country...happens all the time.

In short, just ask the LORD to help you. He is the best teacher - always. There is no one size fits all method.

God bless.

Now it is off to Farmer's Market in Jackson - wonder what the LORD will bring our way today.

Thank you for your suggestion. As to my husband, he was a great story teller and he usually started his conversations with stories that always tied back to the Bible and the gospel. I have been asking God to remind me of his stories. He spoke so little the last two and a half months of his life and it was such an intense time for me in taking care of him that it has been difficult to remember so many things. It has been a great sorrow to me to have been unable to remember all the things he used to teach me and talk to me about.

I will continue praying for God to help me speak His word to those around me.

Natalie,

You were under a LOT of stress while caring for your husband - I can well relate - which may be why you cannot recall well the stories he shared.

After Regina died I felt compelled to compile a photo album complete with stories of her life and as I remembered it. I also interviewed her friends, asked others to send in memories that I could use.

As I wrote, things came back to me - I was reliving her life. I tried to be as honest as I could - not whitewash reality because she was naughty at times although I do not remember very many specifics. She was primarily a fun child/person to have around.

I said this thinking it could help you to recall the stories. While doing so be sure to get input from others and this can and will trigger memories. Then write it down and make copies for your children....will make a nice birthday/Christmas gift for them. I suggest that by doing so it will bring healing to you and your family. You may even want to make this a family project, but if they are not interested, do it anyway.

God bless.
