Random thoughts about storms

I have some random thoughts about adversities, in particular about storms. We had a tornado rip through here on April 11 that destroyed or damaged 100 homes plus sheds and other out buildings. It was 68 miles long and ranks as among the longest-traveling tornado in MS history. It wrecked havoc a mere seven miles from us upon people we know. Tornadoes are occurring quite frequently here in our area in recent years. So this got me to thinking..

This tornado hit around noon. It meant that all who experienced its power had their schedules changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye. One lady, Shirlene, got a call from her husband telling her to evacuate immediately because it was headed towards their house. She did and a few minutes later completely destroyed their house, shed and grain bins. That morning when Shirlene got up she had no idea her house will be shredded in a few hours. Her plans for the day changed radically.

Life is unpredictable. Well-being not certain nor promised. In a moment it changed forever.

Storms, tornadoes are not subject to the gov rules and regulations. The president cannot stop it, nor can any man-made technology. All are at the mercy of its power, you have no choice. You can either stay in its path and experience its wrath or you can move out of its way and save your skin, but you cannot take your house with you. Man's life is fragile, so are his possessions.

Only God can still the storm. But many times he allows it to proceed on its path, forcing people to acknowledge how powerless they are. Without storms people will believe they are invincible.

Storms affect a limited number of people. While this tornado was a bad one, it could have wrecked more buildings, killed more people had it been a heavily populated area. As it was the country side was sparsely populated. BUT some day there is an earth shattering event going to happen and it will be experienced by all mankind. No one will escape it, no one. No gov, no technology can prevent it. No one can out-run it like Shirlene and her daughters did. Are we ready for this event?

In any case, what happened a few days ago here proves once again the truth of James writings in chapter four...

Jas 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

It is up to God what happens and what takes place.

If man could only realise how powerless he is, he might actually get somewhere.

When it comes to storms a person needs to be aware of the dangerous that lie ahead according to where they live. As Jesus told us to see the sign of the times so to we need to understand the sign of the seasons. If you live in Tornado alley you should be keenly aware of the danger that lies ahead and make preparations for it so when the time comes you are not caught off guard. Failure to do so is to fall asleep and then wonder why the storms happened so fast.

It is a very good mirror image of living according to the spirit. If you sleep and slumber knowing there are certain times ahead then you will reap what you sow accordingly.

John, I got to thinking along the same lines today as what you posted...

Another thought:

There is a wrong way and a right way to run from a tornado. Living in an area where there are few basements and storm shelters, a person learns how to run from storms: do NOT go east - tornadoes travel from the southwest to the northeast. You find out where the thing is and make escaping decisions accordingly, generally travel north.

Scripture tells us we are not ignorant of the devils devices. Since this is the case we work to protect ourselves from them lest we be consumed/destroyed.

Jesus also says He is the way, the truth and the life - only one way. To ignore the nature of a storm and ignore its nature and method of work is to invite disaster. The storm will not change its character to accommodate foolish human decisions. Jesus won't either.

Tornadoes hold a certain fascination to people. Its power is awesome. I had two nephews, both brothers, who chased this storm. Am not completely sure why this is so unless it is to witness a display of awesome power, still bridled by the laws of nature. Am not sure of any spiritual principle this illustrates other then that man does love to see this power at work knowing it is far beyond anything he can do.

And...now forecasters are predicting more rain this week. If this keeps up perhaps y'all better start stock-piling your pantries - too much crop land is too wet for planting and it is high time to get in the fields. If it is not too wet, it may be too cold - my cousin lost a wheat crop in Kansas because of cold recently - second year straight.

Adverse weather conditions evoke profound insights IF your livelihood is dependent upon it cooperating with planting/growing/harvest laws of nature.
