could anyone recommend a good verse by verse commentary?
could anyone recommend a good verse by verse commentary?
NoahJD,
You can get free commentaries by downloading e-sword (e-sword.net)
There are two commentaries that are really good on e-sword (that are free):
1) Matthew Henry
2) John Gill
To be honest, higher-critical commentaries are not worth it. They tend to be more concerned about grammar than about letting the power of God's Word penetrate our hearts.
Another commentary series that I have found particularly beneficial is Tyndale (both OT and NT).
May God bless your study of His Word.
In Christ,
Renoncer
JC Ryle is one of the best
I have some on my E-sword (and mySword) that are good enough, but one time one of them is good, another time I use the other.
I also have a question: is there a more arminian commentary?
thanks I'll be checking out Gill on e-sword
Frank Gaebelein's Expository Bible Commentary set would probably be along the lines you are looking for. I would recommend you consult both. For centuries Matthew Henry's commentary has been used by Calvinists and Arminians (ie. Whitefield and Wesley), though Henry was decidely Calvinist. So if you're getting a set you might think of getting both Gaebelein and W. Hendriksen, so that you may benefit from both perspectives. Just don't restrict yourself to arminian commentaries only.
Adam Clarke Commentary (Old Methodist theologian), Beacon Bible Commentary (Nazarene) I have the older set, Wesleyan Bible Commentary (Wesleyan Scholars). Clarke is on esword as well.
By the way: I got already some commentaries in Dutch and English, but mostly are calvinist, therefor I also want some more arminian...
just that you know :-)
