We decided over the summer to start homeschooling we got all the curriculm and geared up...pretty excited on what the Lord is going to do. Im doing the bible lessons in the evenings. I listened to a few sermons byPaul washer about the family...and it was awesome. I need to post it too. He teach his kids the catechisms, any experience with this and any suggestions?

Here is a well designed resource with several versions of the catechism, including one for younger children. I purchased two of them so that children could read with the parent or teacher.
On a personal note, regarding the catechism, I found it fruitful to review it line by line with my children one on one, so I could focus on their personal understanding of the tenets. We viewed the catechism as a project, taking time once a week with each individual for about an hour over the course of about a year. We got in the habit of having our time together on this project at a small local pizza restaurant, to help frame the catechism not as a feat of memory strength, but as a cherished memory.

When they are young, their minds absorb a lot through rote memorization, which is why it's a perfect age to have them go through the catechism. Of course, they should also memorize Scripture, but the catechism gives them a good framework for which to understand the Scriptures.

I have done catechetical instruction in my home and I beleive it is an excellent method of teaching children to memorize. It is important to remember that the emphasis in this method of teaching is on memorization and therefore there is a danger that we will be satisfied with hearing the children merely recite back some words to us about which they have no real understanding. So we much teach and discuss the material being memorized and the understanding will grow. Truth committed to memory provides the building blocks for such growth.
If you're open to a Baptist background then I can recommend the Truth and Grace memory books from Founders Press. Not only do they contain catechism's tailored for different age groups but the books also include a solid plan for Scripture memory and hymns.
