"Blessed are the meek - for they shall inherit the earth!" Why the meek? Well they are the ones "in meekness receiving the implanted word..." and the word they meekly receive - saves their souls. All who meekly receive the love of the truth are saved by the very truth they receive. This is just like Jesus, who was meek and lowly of heart, so much so, that He meekly received every single word from His Father, whether He read them in the scriptures or heard His Father speak directly.
Like His great ancestor David, He learned - "the meek shall He guide in judgment; the meek shall he teach His way." Our Lord was so meek that He allowed Himself to be meekly led like a lamb to the slaughter without opening His mouth in protest. He allowed Himself to be spat upon, slapped, flogged, mocked, condemned, and crucified. This is the kind of meekness we all need to properly receive the word that will save souls. We need to receive the implanted work in meekness even when men abuse us for doing so. And yes - our Heavenly Father will lead many of us like lambs to the slaughter.
This was our Lord's yoke (a yoke of suffering) - will we take His yoke upon us and learn of Him, He is meek and lowly of heart and it is in Him that we will find rest for our souls. This rest will very likely be found in the fellowship of His suffering. If the goal of disciples is to become like their master, then we need to become like our Lord, sheep led to the slaughter - maybe that's why He sends us out like sheep in the midst of wolves!
