If the story of Adam is simply myth and cannot be taken literally then the whole of the bible cannot be taken as history as I have studied archaeology and when you compare the bible to any other religious book it is beyond compare you have to detract the whole way through scripture if you do not accept one thing as true what about the rest.
The case with Adam in the garden if adam was not a monumental person who by his actions brought sin into the entire human race by his actions. If he is not a real person. Then when looking at the world we cannot explain things such as evil and we cannot give any hope to a dying world. As with advocates of the social gospel, there eternal soul is way more valuable that the food that you can give them as Eternity in torment is much worse that the mere moments of suffering now. As with other doctrines this is getting attacked the idea of an Eternal Hell and Eternal Torment. It seems all our doctrines that have no foundation scripturally our merely whimsical and based on our own emotion, As the creator of the universe who is essentially a good God, our own finite minds cannot even grasp the God who has created DNA or any other complex system which would put even the greatest minds to shame.
Our faith is historically based we can look at the world we live in and know we serve a timeless God, one who has seen fades come and go in the christian church and in science.
What will be an Eternal perspective on this present church age we live in as that is the only opinion that really matters. As we will be standing before him on Judgement Day.
All sin is in it essence even if it against another person against God. Without god we cannot even repent as without him we can do nothing.
