Recommend Christian biographies

D
dolfan Mar 19, 2014

I would like to know all of your recommendations for biographies you have read of other Christians. I am especially interested in those of ages past but not to limit you in sharing.

Somehow, in my reading over the years I neglected this very biblical practice of reading the true life accounts of our forbears in the faith. I want to start now. I think I will find a biography of Bunyan or Tyndale to start. But, there are surely others.

I truly enjoy listening to Christian Classics when I can on BBN radio, a 15 minute daily reading of such biographies. But, I am no longer just interested in this. I think it is to be a help to particularly read of those who suffered persecution, rejection, ridicule and personal struggles as they matured into the heroes we now thank God for as examples.

"Watchman Nee" 'Man of Suffering'

Heroes of the Faith series by Barbour publishers

After reading this, I realized that (I think) the 'underground church' in China was largely built on Watchman Nee's teaching.

Deeper Experiences of Famous Christians by James Gilchrist Lawson

A collection of 20 mini-biographies of 20 persons used mightily by God. Focuses mainly on their experience with the Holy Spirit in transforming their lives into that of the resurrected living Lord Jesus. Powerful reading.
Highly Recommended!

There is a paperback version of Finney's autobiography edited by Helen Wessel that is easy to read, and combines his controversial Theology with the ministry style that revolutionized how people could come to Christ.

I keep loaning out my copies, rarely get them back- but can usually find more at Amazon...

The Awakening: One Man's Battle With Darkness by Friedrich Zuendel; it is an excellent biography of Johann Christoph Blumhardt, a parish priest in the Black Forest around 1840.

And it is in pdf format here (approx 124 pg):

Some of my favorites: All autobiographies

Corrie ten Boom - all her writings which are numerous - some are repetitive

Darlene Deiber Rose - "Evidence Not Seen" - the story of her life preceding her capture by the Japanese during WW2 and her subsequent release

Bilquis Sheikh - "I Dared to Call Him Father" - the story of a high-born Muslim woman who came to the LORD

"Kay Evans" - "A Song for Your Honor" - the true story of a widow whose in-laws worked to take her children away from her after her husband's death. (She is using a pen name due to the nature of the book - I have personally met her and some of her daughters)

Bernard Nathanson - "The Hand of God" - the testimony of one led the fight to legalize abortion and later came to grief because of it. This story is disturbing, tragic and yet enlightening - one whose end had not happened yet at the time of printing.

A comparatively unknown contemporary biography that you just can't put down is 'ZVI : The Miraculous Story of Triumph Over the Holocaust'.

The story of Zvi a Jewish boy who escaped the holocaust in Poland and eventually made it to Israel, where He met His Messiah, Jesus. Zvi is still alive today and preaching the gospel in Israel.

Recently written eye-opener biographies:

Son of Hamas - by Mosab Hassan Yousef

Prisoner of Tehran - by Marina Nemat

Night of a Million Miracles by Paul Estabrooks (about the smuggling of a million bibles into China)

China's Christian Millions -by Lambert

You should include writings by Richard Warmbrand in your list.
And "Chasing the Dragon" by Jackee Pulinger

Happy reading!!

I agree. It should be read in conjunction with Blumhardt's Battle (link below) which goes into greater detail about what this man of God had to deal with.

I will be honest with you-- I found this fascinating but rather frightening and I would say that some persons probably should not read it.
