Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou does alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:1-4 KJV)
I was reflecting on the death of our Lord and comparing it with the Jesus doctrine as taught in the Sermon on the Mount. When I read this passage, I thought of Judas going out to betray Jesus. However, in that situation the others thought that Judas may have going to give money to the poor. Judas was sent out, in the middle of the night without anyone else knowing what he was doing or why he was going. We know that at that time he was going to betray the Lord but the others didn't have a clear knowledge of what he was doing. In their relationship and obedience to Christ Jesus, they didn't know when Judas was being sent to give to the poor.
In regard to the giving to the poor we need to be very careful. I have often been bothered by the pictures of poor children in Christians' homes. If the giving was really as unto the Lord and done in secret, no one should see them. Others should not know about it at all, just like Judas and the others. We need to be wary of doing our good works before men to be praised by them because Christ says that we have lost any reward that may have been ours in eternity.
