Revelation Time Table

sermonindex Apr 14, 2005

Hi guysIs there any guys or gals out there that can do the math (not good with numbers) of the half an hour in Revelation?8:1 "And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour."The primer is 1000 years liken unto 1 day.In years what would a half an hour be by breaking up the 1 day?I am not sure if 24 hours make up one day to the Hebrew, it might be less or more.I am not looking for interpretation, just numbers.ThanksKarl

Maybe it's just half an hour no?

Math only ... no interpretation ... no agreement :-) ... one half hour = 20.833 years.

Peter says 'a thousand years is as one day and one day as a thousand years'. This is not an equation. If I say I can sing as beautifully as a duck; that does not mean I am a duck. This is a simile. In fact even in Gregg's 20.833 years one day would be as a thousand years, which if we were working with an equation would be 7,604.045 years, but each of those years would also have a thousand years for a day, which would give 2,775,476.425 years. But then again each of those years would have 365 days where each one was equivalent to a 1000 years... don't think my calculator can take this any further. In any case any of those thousand years would also be a 'one day' which if I did the math right in the first place should ultimately bring you back to 'half and hour'.;-)

It would be great if that were the truth, IronMan. But when you consider Philogos post, one begins to wonder.I asked the mathematical question for a reason, and it wasn't what I was looking for. But when reviewing your posts, I asked myself another question. If there is silence in heaven about the space of an half an hour, what is time doing in heaven when there is no time?"And when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour."Now a half an hour is going to be more in heaven then on the earth, because a thousand years as to the LORD is one day and one day is as a thousand years. Heavens clock is going to be different from ours.....alot different.Karl

A thousand years is as a day.How often I have heard this quoted in relation to somebody's prophetic timeline (no reference to you Karl, just a general observation). Never heard this one used though :-"For a thousand years, in thy sight, are as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. " psalm 90:4A watch in the night is two hours (or three, can't remember off hand). I think the main point being made here is that a long time to us is not a long time to God. As for the opposite "a day is as a thousand years"; God can do '1000 years' work in a day.I don't think it was ever meant to be taken as a prophetic 'key'. Just a reminder to us.Taco.

I must have missed something here. Hi RobertI was just in a teasing mood! The point is that a simile is not an equation but a parallel. The thousand years is 'as' a day and the day is 'as' a thousand years at the same time. This is not heaven's currency conversion rate or a statement that God views time differently but that he views time as both instant and stretched out at the same time.Poets have the ability to freeze a moment in time to give you an opportunity to watch it and consider its implications. But they can easily lose the speed with which events are transpiring. God sees things in 'slow motion' and 'fast forward' at the same time. (these are metaphores!!)

RonWow :-? we agree on something :-P

Ron brings up a good point though that God doesn't live in time as we know it. Time is his toy and it is a long or short for us as he sees fit. At the end of the day those who are living for God will be able to recognize these things as they occur because they will receive the corresponding revelation via the holy spirit. In fact even in Gregg's 20.833 years one day would be as a thousand years, which if we were working with an equation would be 7,604.045 years, but each of those years would also have a thousand years for a day, which would give 2,775,476.425 years. But then again each of those years would have 365 days where each one was equivalent to a 1000 years... don't think my calculator can take this any further. my calculator came up with this number 1013048931260 yrs :-?

KarlI think it is just that, half an hour. John observed by whatever means that it was half an hour and wrote it as such because that's what was shown to him. Later on he writes about the 200 million strong army after which he writes "I heard the number" so that's how many soldiers were involved. At the end of the day it says half an hour, which is thirty minutes and I'm not going to crack my head trying to figure out how long that is, I'll just take it as thirty minutes. For God who does not live in linear time like we do time is no big deal. A thousand years is as a day to the lord etc. That is not a hard and fast rule , a day could be 10000 yrs to God or 99999999 yrs, or 65890123456890683460345689 years , see the point is time is not the same necessarily for God as it is for us. If he wants half an hour to be 30 min then it will be, time is his toy and it does his bidding that's the whole point.at any rate for those who are living for God the spirit will reveal these things for them so we will recognize them. The key is to be living for God in the spirit, through that all things are revealed. We get wrapt up in all the details and tryng to figure it out with our heads sometimes that the holy spirit gets sidelined, then we get lost. If we just yield to the spirit and let him teach us more and use our heads less we'd find things to be so much simpler than we have lead ourselves to believe...I'm finding that out every day... By the way how would figuring that out affect your walk of faith or anyone elses? I'm just curious, it may well have a profound effect or it may not mean a thing. In all things we should seek the leading of the spirit for these things are what edify the body of believers. :-D

I can't see why that can't be done. As persons such as ourselves, we tend to start threads thru curiosity and find out later that it was not worth starting. Karl

KarlI see. I kinda agree with you concerning the moderation of the discussions, to limit them somehow to what would be edifying to the body of believers. We do waste much time and resource discssing things that will be of no benefit to us. We should be more intent to do whatever God puts on us through His spirit so that we can do works that will abide the fire. We should always be sure that what we do will abide the fire, if it won't, what good does it do?God bless you karl
