Voicing the Heart of God

Words are fleeting things. We coach and coax our children toward Christ. We plead. We pray. We teach. We read. We talk. We yell sometimes. We pour rivers of words onto our kids. And, the words stick less than the way we say them. Our manner and tone and true feelings permeate through our words and drive deeply into the hearts of our children.

You see, my daughter is headstrong. Me? Oh, I’m merely … insistent. I had started to pray regularly and more specifically for my then 9 year old daughter. It wasn’t out of fear that she would rebel one day. It was, though, out of fear that I was missing the boat as a father, and that I could lead her away from Christ unintentionally. She was (is!) extremely smart, and perceptive in uncanny ways. And, so much of my talk to her was just blowing air. A lot of it was hot.

Then, on February 12, 2013, the Lord spoke to me definitively in prayer: "You will carry her and speak soft words to her as her earthly father. But, I will cause her to stand as her Heavenly Father, and I will cause My Word to be spoken through her, and what I have said cannot be retaken.” You may not believe that but it is not my concern. I wrote it down (or, can’t you tell?). It has reminded me many times and has informed not only my prayers for my family but my relationships, too. It has gradually shaped my entire relationship with my daughter. Now, I listen with cautious giddiness as she says things to me that sound like the things I say to her. I say "cautious” because we’re moving toward 12 and I’m not naïve enough to expect her to always parrot my words back to me as if they are hers. But, I’m optimistic and I have a reason to be.
