Exploiting Periscope

Periscope is a new social media platform that lets users post video and interact in real time while the video is live. It runs through Twitter, or that is at least how I understand it. I have an account and see things posted by brothers that I follow on Twitter.

Point being this has real potential for edification among believers. It is not like Vine where your length is short and you are silly or pithy. It is not like YouTube which stores videos long term. This is more akin to a cross between Vine and Instagram. Videos disappear after a short time. The format encourages live or nearly live viewing. Twitter feeds are used to announce the videos and can be per scheduled as well as real time invitations for an ongoing post.

Applications come to mind like the revival prayer call, home meetings, or more usefully our encouragements one to another or even brief teaching. A pastor friend of mine in Hawaii posted a video on Periscope on how to use it as a pastor: if he can give a 5 minute lesson on that, we can give similar short edifying words to one another.

It is a thought not only for SI but for each of us in the relationships with believers where we are. I am going to encourage our home group to utilize it to speak to each other through the week. Just some thoughts.

Between court and appointments, thought I would add this.

A feature of Periscope is that questions and comments can be posted to your live broadcast. You can also block or limit access to chosen users and followers.

I just popped in in a live Periscope lesson and posted the question whether a written tutorial exists. They read the question aloud right then, and answered it. (He didnt know if there is one, and I felt 90 when he said there were lots of video tutorials.).

Also I learned in that brief pop in that your videos, like Snapchat, disappears 24 hours later.

My old denomination's sort of flagship church, where a friend of ours pastors, hosted a conference this weekend and its training sessions were often put live on Periscope.

You will see lots of goofiness among users. As my Hawaii friend said, new platforms are immature and attract immature people. But, this just seems like a way to connect that has been lacking, and it seems so suited for the kind of fellowship SI encourages.

BTW, I just posted a short exhortation from Ephesians 1 in my garage. It is 13 minutes long, ad libbed. Manuel Brambila, who works closely with Ray Comfort, joined in as the sole live viewer. I do not know him but we have talked briefly a few years ago and follow each other on Twitter and now on Periscope.

I posted it for an example of the kinds of things we can do with one another.

LMH, I did not view from my laptop. So that is new info.

Also, I may have misspoken on creating the account in my Windows laptop. I was at my desk at work but may have had my iPad in hand. LMH's info has caused me to doubt my memory on that. ❗️

I followed you. I had posted a video but it did not remain available after I went offline. I did something wrong. :). There are written tutorials since the app itself has no instructions. It is so self explanatory though I suppose they did not figure on thick skulls like mine.

I have never heard of Periscope until I heard about it on a sports radio station on Monday driving home from work.

There was a boxing fight between two individuals recently and these radio announcers were talking about how they got to watch this fight for free while others paid a lot of money for it.

However they made it sound like this Periscope pirated this fight?

I KNOW NOTHING about this kind of stuff and am clueless as to how any social media stuff works. I only do Linked In because of my job.

My first thought was that if they were pirating through this Periscope wouldn't that be stealing when others had to pay?

Bro Greg, if you or bro Edgar or anyone with SI would broadcast a Q and A session, maybe around a theme, and invite users to "register" thru SI with their Twitter handles so you can lock out hateful, unbelieving Periscope users and to control the screen from ugly comments from unfamiliar viewers, I think it would be spectacular. The thought of it is exciting enough.

To beat an old drum, my buddy in Hawaii develops pastors thru his local church. (I know, crazy right?). Last night in addition to U streaming an introductory session of a new class they are doing on sermon prep, he Periscoped it. I watched a bit of it. A little dry and clunky but it has a lot of potential for teaching and training.

Very wise cautionary instruction though. Needed.
