I'm probably the least of the folks here that should be deciphering scripture, as I have a lot of trouble with scripture myself. My best explanation, although it be short, I would say, yielding yourself to God’s Word and walking in love. I'm sure many more answers are on the way.
God Bless
Mr. Bill
Beloved of God,
Please see the thread titled, 'Pursuing a relationship with Jesus'.
In Him, is the victory you seek.
Peace to you.
That's good, Bill.
If we are loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength and our neighbor as our self then we will be in God's will.
Walking in the Spirit is walking according to the will of God. What is the will of God? Love Him with ALL of your HEART and Love your neighbor as yourself.
You won't be walking according to the lust of the flesh. If you are walking according to the lusts of the flesh your affections won't be set on God.
Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Col 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
The renewed mind walks according to the Spirit by putting to death the deeds of the flesh.
1 John 2:17 -- Who abides forever? (Note: 1 Peter 4:1-2, those who do the will of God suffer in the flesh and cease from sin and do not live for the lusts of men.) The opposite of the lust of the flesh is the will of God.
"Walk in the spirit", according to me means to obey the spirit in small things in our life. When the spirit wants you to turn away from something you respond immediately. In short it is to be sensitive to the voice of the spirit in every walk (step) of our life.
For example if someone is struggling with Pornography, then walking in spirit will make them turn away from an obscene drawing or picture as you pass by, will make you turn away from a women who is provocatively dressed and will make you put an end to a lustful thought. This way we keep our hearts clean. If overcoming Pornography is like climbing the 1st floor then walking in the spirit will make us climb one step at a time until we reach the 1st floor. The problem with people is they directly try to concur or reach 1st floor without climbing the small steps, hence they keep fighting without any victory. But it is the small steps that gives us victory. It was a small stone that knocked out Goliath. So if we focus on those small things that the spirit wants us to obey, we will also find our self not carrying out the desires of our flesh.
I think it is meaning to be in constant pursuit of God ,through every biblical possible way of being filled with the sprit ,we can only walk in the spirit when we are always being filled with the spirit through much pray and worship and praise bible meditation and through solid exhortations form others like pasters and also to walk in our God given ministerys fullfilling our God given gifts, when we pursue God and gods will in this way, we will have no time to fulfilled the lusts of the flesh ,neither will the flesh have power to over comes us with us falling for temptation , our dersement and conviction of sin and satans wiles will be very clear and strong ,when we walk in the spirit we will not fullfill the lusts of the flesh....
Amen to all the other comments
The Spirit and the flesh are at war with one
another. The believer is a new creation
with a reborn spirit that is in dwelt by the
Holy Spirit. The flesh is the old sin nature
that the bible refers to as the "old man".
Walking in the Spirit is allowing the Holy
Spirit to to have control. If we walk in the
Spirit, we will walk in love, bearing the
fruit of the Spirit, and this will keep us from
walking after the flesh.
VERY CORRECT BROTHER JULIUS BUT HOW DO WE PRACTICALLY PUT TO DEATH THE DEEDS OF THE FLESH?
I would like to try and give you the answer to this question. Early in my walk and developing relationship with Jesus, my eyes were opened more and more to my sinning ways and no matter how much I tried, I could not put an end to most of my sin; and I really tried hard because I wanted to please Him just like a child that wants to please his parents. So, I was quite distressed. I read that statement that Paul made when he said "why do I do the things I don't want to do and don't do the things that I want to do"? I read that verse a lot because here was a really great disciple that had the same problem as me. I didn't want Jesus to be irritated with me and say "I told you to stop doing that"! Sometime later the revelation came to me that the reason why I was having a hard time trying to quit doing and thinking about my sin problem was because I didn't have the power to free myself from the deeds of the flesh. Only Jesus can do that. We can do nothing on our own power. So if Jesus doesn't do it for us than it'll never get done. But praise God, He does do that in us. The only two requirements for us on our journey with Him are... Trust and obey. If you most all ways do those two things everything will work out good for you plus you don't have to worry about that impossible task of working towards perfection.
I hope my story helps you.
I will pray for you.

Reading a little further on in Galatians, verse 24 speaks of having crucified the flesh, past tense. When we first believe and are baptized we do in principle turn our backs forever on an old way of living and thinking. It can truly be said that we are dead(crucified) to that old life, we're not going back if we have truly had a revelation of Jesus Christ. But the actual practice of that principle must be daily worked out and this is why Paul wrote in the very next verse, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25). Jesus said were are to take up our cross daily, that means we are to be executioners, dealing violently with the body of sin every day. This is what it means to walk in the Spirit.
In Christ,
please ca you paste the link "Pursuing a relationship with Jesus"
thanks
Philip,
You can discipline yourself to "yield" to the Holy Spirit or you can discipline yourself to "resist" the Holy Spirit.
If you choose yielding, you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
Sometimes we will fail but learn from it because "the righteous falls seven times and rises again..." (Prov 24.16). The righteous get back up!
God bless, hope this helped,
Lisa
