Growing unease about social media

I am growing weary about social media like FB.
We use it as a convenient and free tool to see what friends are up to. Still, there is so much vanity and it is sad to see what some people post and it is also addictive, lets face it.
I think one day we have to go underground just as some of our Christian brothers elsewhere are forced to.
Some of my friends have come off social media already.
FB and other networks have a more or less complete picture about your social network and life.
I wonder if some evil forces will get hold of social media and we will be betrayed and everything we post for the promotion of
God's kingdom will be held against us with factual evidence.
Will be able to erase all our traces before it is too late? Or should we stay on, use the media to spread the gospel and not care about our
safety? We will also endanger other people who are in our social circles.

During WWII very few Jews assessed the situation correctly and emigrated. All the others were trapped and paid with their life. Many saw it coming but did not want to face the consequences and leave the places where they were so well established. Are we in a similar situation as in the late 1930ies?

Has any one of you come off social media? What will happen if one day we are forced out of the internet altogether?

Yes I deactivated all of my social media accounts. I did use it somewhat as an evangelism tool but found overall that it was just a complete waste of time. The bad most def out weighed the good. I'm not a radical calling for all believers to boycott social media by no means but in my personal life ,though I would in no way call Facebook or Twitter sin, I could definitely tell that it was effecting me negatively. Mostly by consuming my time. I think John Piper said it best when he said something along the lines of the greatest use for Facebook and Twitter in the last days will be to show that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.

I put Facebook down over 5 years ago, Amen!
If I recall correctly everything is being stored.

Yeah I did too,... could basically just cut/copy/post brother Joshua's response as it is very much my experience with it as well as the points you bring out in your initial post.
A few years back our Pastor asked "what if Christianity was outlawed and made criminal tomorrow, is there enough evidence out there to convict you? Not your Facebook page or bumper stickers or your t-shirts as you could remove all of those but is your character so inextricably wrapped up in the life of Christ that you would be unquestionably convicted?"
I'm sure there are several versions of this out there but this was the first time I'd been confronted by such as this and was deeply convicted as I could not say that I would be found guilty as much of my Christian life at the time was surface level tho I didn't realize it as I got so much praise for my FB posts which for me became the measure so to speak, which did kind of become a form of approval addiction.
Once deactivated I honestly felt a freedom from the need to perform/be informed, etc..that seems to come with the territory of social media as a whole. Now those hours are spent with He who is life and I wouldn't go back for all the world.
Btw my wife shares your theory that it is being kept and will be used to defraud, shame, etc... Believers in the days to come and while idk about this it honestly wouldn't surprise me or really bother me either way as our Lord says the world will hate us because it hated Him and we don't belong to it but Him so as I see it, this is an inevitability wether thru the exploitation of our social media platforms or some other means.
