In the lyrics of their song Epitaph, the secular rock band King Crimson, sang, "The fate of all mankind I see is in the hands of fools.” Greg Lake, the bass player for King Crimson at the time, said, "Epitaph’ is basically a song about looking with confusion upon a world gone mad.” This song was released in 1969. What would they have written if they had been able to see thirty to forty years into their future?
I used the lyrics of this song because I think these words resonate well with the mood that is prevalent in our society. It is becoming more obvious that many are convinced that dangerous and catastrophic events are soon to unfold. There is this sense that the fate of all mankind truly is in the hands of fools. From a completely naturalistic viewpoint, it’s easy to concur with these lyrics, as well as, the mood of our world. The madness of our time is both astonishing & frightening.
But does the fate of men lie in the hands of men? This question will be answered differently, depending on your worldview. For Christians, a biblical worldview offers a more hopeful understanding of the madness surrounding us. Through the Word of God we can understand that the fate of men does not lie with men, but with God. Another famous singer named David once wrote, "My times are in Your hand” (Ps 31:15).
The Bible paints a narrative for us of an all-powerful God whose wisdom is unrivaled ”“ a God who knows the beginning and the end of all things. Not only does He know them, He orchestrates events and causes things to happen that will bring about His ultimate purpose in the earth. Many things that we are watching unfold before our very eyes were foretold by Jesus and the prophets thousands of years ago. We are living in the final climatic days of end-time prophecy.
Christians believe that the events unfolding in our world are merely setting the stage for a rapture and second coming of Jesus. At His coming, the fate of all men will be in the hands of a holy and just God. Evil will be judged and the righteous will reign with Christ forever. The righteous will be spared; their fate was determined long ago by nail pieced hands. Their iniquities were borne by Christ and judged at the cross.
Until Christ comes, He will continue to orchestrate events for His purpose. For you child of God, not one hair from your head will fall to the ground without your Father approving it. Until He is done with us on this earth, the Church will continue to live and thrive and accomplish His will. Until He is finished with us, let’s stay the course and keep our ears and eyes focused on Jesus. We have good reasons to believe our wait will not be much longer.
Never forget, our Lord is coming. Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, "Behold, the Lord is coming with ten thousand of His saints and every eye will see Him” (Ju 1:14). Look up Church! Our life is in HIS hands. Our redemption is at the door! No amount of madness in the world can change that truth.
