Power of the Word
The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
Charles Spurgeon paid a visit to Albert Hall where he was to preach on the coming Sabbath. In order to test out the hall with his voice, he mounted the platform and repeated the text, "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Not long afterward, he received word that the mere repetition of that text had born rich fruit. A painter, at work in some part of the great hall, was startled when he heard the voice of Spurgeon repeating that great sentence. The words so impressed him that he was converted and brought to Christ.
So often we fail to recognize the power in God’s Word. Our earthly words fall to the ground and die after being spoken, but His Word endures forever. The Word of God is what pierces the sinner’s heart, convinces him of his separation from God, and brings him to the altar. After all, how is someone going to know they have broken the law, unless you show them in the Book? Once they have been shown, it begins playing on their conscience. It’s not the preacher that convicts, but rather the Holy Spirit bringing to light God’s precious Word.
Spurgeon gave a warning that applies to every Christian when he said, "It will be our dull sermons that will haunt us on our dying beds.” Why? Because only the Word of God endures. Nothing within us has the power to set a man free.
When you come in contact with the spiritually barren, the Word is the pure water they need. In the words of Paul, "Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2).
