When we had the discussion about CS Lewis and his book I noticed the following quote in one of the posts:
"True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less " (C.S. Lewis)
To me this just didn't sound right, so I decided to do a bit more research about it.
An interesting point I discovered was that apparently CS Lewis never even said that , I also found the same quote with Rick Warren's name behind it.
To me it simply means there is a lot of stuff circulating on the internet and it pays to be a bit careful what we read.
I'm not discussing here who the real messenger might be , I would just like to focus on the message ( the quote itself ) a bit more.
An other interesting point is that this definition what "true humility " is, is not in a dictionary such as the Oxford dictionary or a Bible dictionary.Someone just made it up - and it has become a popular quote that is circulating around!
When I saw the word "humility " I immediately thought about Jesus and what Scripture has to say about Him
..."but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8) - and v5 : "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus "
This is powerful stuff ! This is the "real thing" - this is true humility !
Andrew Murray wrote in "Humility - The Beauty of Holiness" :
"The creature has not only to look back to the origin and first beginning of existence,and acknowledge that it there owes everything to God; its chief care,its highest virtue, its only happiness,now and through all eternity, is to present itself an empty vessel, in which God can dwell and manifest His power and goodness."
