A word to encourage the saints.

sermonindex Jan 16, 2016

Hi saints, the Lord put this word in my heart a couple of days ago. I feel sure that it will bless someone who needs to be encouraged this morning................

To be filled with the Spirit of God is to have come through feelings, disturbance, anxiety, disappointments and emptiness. When you reach that place of despair, when you have gone to the last person and you have written the last editor, when you have followed the last evangelist around, and hunted down the last fellow to counsel with you-when no man can help you anymore and you are in a state of inward despair-this is when you will recognize that you are near the place where God can finally do what He wants to do for you. When there comes that despair with self, that emptying out of you and that inner loneliness, you are getting close.(Tozer)

This is the most difficult place for the saint on the journey home. Tozer says it well, you are getting closer. When all the world has lost its appeal to you When you find yourself wandering in the wasteland dunes of anxiety and emptiness and disappointments, know that God is near. You must know it for you will not feel it. Keep walking saint, this is the desert place known as despair. No man or woman can help you. This is simply between you and God and the refiners fire. You will be tested in this. God is looking for a people who seek to worship Him with their whole hearts.

And if you think that all of your troubles are without purpose then you are wrong saint. There is a purpose in every trial, in every trouble, in every disappointment. There is a purpose in every step you take through the desert of despair and loneliness. Yes indeed you must pass through these places in order to continue the journey home on the narrow path, it is true that there are no short-cuts, no way around these difficult places of death. The enemy will whisper in your ear when you seem to be surrounded by darkness and defeat ” what was it all about.” He will ask you to consider the possibility that your life has been for nothing and that there has been no purpose in any of your suffering. Liar! Brothers and sisters, he is a liar and I know I speak to someone who needs to hear that today.

Psa 84:6 Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.

The Valley of Baca, the valley of weeping, the valley of tears. The road to the altar, the tabernacle traverses many valleys. Some are narrow some are deep . There is no avoiding them. You will shed tears in these valleys. You will often times feel abandoned in these valleys. What should you do as you travel through these valleys? Dig deeper. Dig holes in these valleys brothers and sisters. These valleys are without rain and it would seem to many that they will surely die as they go through it. You will not die. So why should you stop and dig holes in this valley. Why not rush through as quickly as possible? The truth is, this valley cannot be rushed. No matter how much you run, to the left or the right, you have to go through the valley. Even if you run straight ahead, the valley will last exactly how long it is supposed to last. So, when you stop in the midst of it, when you resist the urge to panic and fear, when you embrace the fact that this valley has to be gone through, these "dark nights of the soul,” will become an oasis and a place of refreshment to those who have faith and continue to trust in the Lord.

You will not be tempted more than you are able. The Lord has not abandoned you. He will minister to you. When you dig deeper, you are emptying yourself in preparation to receive the Lords presence. He will come to you on your journey, on your pilgrimage , in your deepest valleys. And to those who dig, their holes will be filled abundantly when the flash flood of His rain comes. The steeper the valley, the bigger the flood. The holes ensure that when the flood ends, their will be pools of water left over that will not only minister to you, but will comfort and encourage those who come along behind you, for remember, there is only one path, the narrow one, and all must traverse it. Let your tears fall saints, your tears shall remain. They shall refresh another. Stand fast brothers and sisters. You keep on walking no matter how dark it has become. You are surrounded by troubles on every side and inwardly there are fears? You are not alone, this is the path and you are where you should be and it shall not overcome you.

Inside of you lies the treasures of God, inside that earthen vessel. You have been called to comfort those with the comfort you yourself have been comforted with along the way. When you pass through this place of death and you are not overcome, you will testify of it and comfort others and glorify God. Remember saints, we are always bearing about in the body, the dying of the Lord Jesus, the life of the cross, the way of sacrifice, that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our lives. The greater the trial the closer our God. You say ” but this trial is such that I cannot feel Him, I cannot sense His presence.” Saints, one of the greatest trials of all is trust. Our foundation is built upon faith. The enemy will try to pull you down and destroy you by coming against the very foundation of your life, your faith. Your life in the Spirit stands upon faith in Jesus. Stand today brother, stand today sister.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Wait upon the Lord and He will come to you. Wait, wait, keep waiting, keep trusting, keep abiding, keep praying, keep trusting, keep praising, keep reading His word. You will not faint, you will not fall in this desert. When the rain comes and it will come, you will walk and you will run and you will mount up with wings as eagles and you will revel in the presence of God. One day, one moment in His presence is better than a thousand elsewhere. In one moment, in one word, in one breath of the Holy Spirit there is life and eternity and hope and joy. One more thing brothers and sisters, and never doubt this. Your Father loves you. He sees you. He has not forgotten you. His love for you is an everlasting love. His thoughts towards you cannot be numbered, they are greater than the sands of the seashore. Stand fast in this and know that you are known. Let your tears fill the valleys, none are lost.......bro Frank

I read this message just before midnight on the day it was posted. I have read it many times since then. It is the exact journey I am still on that started over three years ago. It has been a very hard walk and still is today. I question every few days if I can really go any farther. But, what is the alternative? I am unable to direct circumstances and outcomes I'd rather have. The reason is that all of the skills I learned in life to survive along with my self willed power to make them happen are no longer available to me. During the last few years I have been stripped of every single identity I had. (Daughter, sister, nurse, friend, always referred to as "the strong one, the leader" and on and on. Many identities and now, none. The saddest of all I guess is that all of my family members (except one brother) died during this time. After the last funeral my brother told me rather matter of fact that he was flying to Budapest the next morning and would never come back to America. I lost my job early on and have no resources or support except Jesus. He is the only one. I have to depend on Him for every loaf of bread, every gallon of gas, every dollar in my bank account and even every roll of toilet paper! It gets so scary at times that I just cry and go to bed regardless of the time of day. I have been a Christian since 9/11/1970. Got saved in the great Jesus revival during that time. But never...never...have I had a trial, or desert experience like the magnitude of this. Even the church I once attended fell away. The pastor and other higher up members told me that I was bringing all these troubles on myself because I was not following God's will for my life. I knew they were wrong and I eventually left there. After losing my job and not being able to get another (and I kept going to interviews always praying before hand for the door to be open or shut by Jesus..and He always had them shut). I was beginning to see His plan a little clearer during those times and I sort of knew that He was teaching me to TOTALLY rely on Him for every single thing I had need for. A little over a year ago I noticed I was starting to not see well in my right eye. I went to the doctor and he examined my eye then said in a quiet sort of way, "you've got a rare eye disease that will cause total blindness pretty quickly and your left eye will follow suit". He said there was no cure for this. I asked for the time frame and he said "about three months." I cried all the way home and very loudly ask Jesus why! What was I doing wrong? It had to be something! This was too much for me to bear and I told Him so. But He worked out the most wonderful plan for that. Long story short on that..I was referred to a research program doing studies on this disease. Injections (at $2,700 a shot) were being given in the eye and it was effective for some patients. I applied for and got two medical grants and have yet to pay a penny. I am still in the program, my eye is much improved and my other eye has not shown any symptoms! I have been down to a little over one day's food supply and He always shows up at the last minute using someone to bring me food. I certainly apologize for the length of this post. It may not be acceptable but if I told you the hundreds of other things that have happened during this time it'd take up a lot of pages. So..I've met extreme despair up close and personal. My house caught on fire last winter. It was confined to the living room so it's livable. I thought His plan was to move me to another location but guess not now. Back to the original post by Appolus, it has been heavy on my mind to write my experience. I hope this isn't inappropriate. One last thing. About three months before all this started I had a very clear vision in my mind. I was sitting in a car in the front seat on the passengers side. The window was rolled down, I had my arm resting on the door with a smile on my face. (It wasn't my car.) Jesus was driving and he was telling me that He was going to take me way down deep in the ocean. (I thought He said under the ocean but "in" sounds more appropriate.) We had just started going through one of those tunnels like the one in New York the cars go through. I remember the inside of the tunnel was all painted green. I said to Him "ok, you're driving. I'll just sit back, let you drive and be happy over here." Many times that vision has kept me still believing that it really will be ok and just keep moving. Just a couple other things that happened (but I won't go into them) My car died and I didn't have any money to get it fixed. The compressor burned up in my refrigerator, the roof on my house developed three major leaks and I need new drywall, ect., I fell ten feet off a ladder, I fell while running up a rocky hill in my backyard while running fast as I could from a Copper Head snake and flattened my knee cap, had to give up my phone because I couldn't pay the bill, my house got broken into, a lot of stuff stolen. I guess that's enough. Jesus comes through every time. He really does. I still have Love and mercy and grace and His watchful eye everyday.

In Him,
alamb

@alamb

Your testimony encouraged me. I'm always encouraged when I read about others in Christ who are being taught total dependency on the Lord. It's an amazing journey and you are not alone. It took me a while to understand God's "invitation” to fellowship with Him because it was always packaged in suffering and I was always like, "no!...what now”? It was never ending, one thing after another for years. One person even asked me, "What did you do to make God so angry?”. The things that were happening to me were unbelievable and all for my making. There is nothing like KNOWING the Lord and being built on Him and Him alone. Glory to God, I feel so much joy in reading what you have shared. You blessed me and I thank you for that.

Hi alamb,

I am so glad that you were encouraged to read the post. Just minutes after writing it I was standing in the kitchen and the Holy Spirit laid upon my heart an old hymn I have not sung for years ” All hail the power of Jesus’ name.” In my spirit’s eye I could see a great multitude around the throne singing ” Bring forth the Royal Diadem,” as the Diadem was brought forward. For just a moment I was transported to another place, a coronation that thrilled my soul. There was a multitude that could not be numbered from every tribe and tongue and nation. In this world I would never be invited to a coronation of any royalty. Yet in the Kingdom of God as a son I am invited by Jesus to His coronation throne of Almighty God my Father. This caused my spirit to soar. A peasant who sits down at the feet of the King.

This is our future sister and God prepares His people for the future whether for this world or the next or both and that preparation can often be considered brutal. Learning dependence upon the Lord, true dependence is as tough as it comes because it strips our flesh away, our self-sufficiency away to a point where we truly rely upon Him. Someone posted this on facebook this morning and I thought it really ties into what we are discussing here..........

"When God gives you a vision and darkness follows, wait. God will bring the vision He has given you to reality in your life if you will wait on His timing. Abram went through thirteen years of silence, but in those years all of his self-sufficiency was destroyed. He grew past the point of relying on his own common sense. Those years of silence were a time of discipline, not a period of God’s displeasure. Just wait upon God and be grounded in Him." --Oswald Chambers, from My Utmost for His Highest.

You had that vision sister of being taken down deep into the ocean. I had two visions several years ago. One was glorious, transported it seemed into a glorious place where the Lord showed me things. This was followed later by a scary vision, seemed more like reality than a vision. I was standing praying and suddenly I found myself plunged, compelled, under the relatively shallow waters of a fast flowing river.

I panicked as I lay flat on my back on smooth stones looking up. The Holy Spirit spoke and said " be calm, breathe, I will enable you to survive here but here you must stay." I breathed and was relieved to find out I would not drown. And then the vision ended. The Lord showed me that these waters that flowed over me were the waters of life, not the life of the Spirit but the waters of the world.

These waters would turn me into a smooth stone, useful to the Lord. And so through circumstances, life itself with all its many troubles, it seems to have been one sore trial followed by another for the last several years. I do not feel led to go through the troubles that I have faced in the last several years but enough to say that I can relate to you sister, maybe not by the exact same circumstances but certainly by the process.

I personally believe that the Lord is preparing His saints for the troubled times that lie ahead. He is going to need tried and tested saints to encourage others as the darkness continues to increase. He is gathering His smooth stones, smoothed by the ravages of life but not defeated by them. Overcomers, those who have the experience of enduring God will use as He sees fit. And one day sister we will rejoice as we gather around that throne with that great multitude and we will look back at our light and momentary afflictions and count them all as nothing in comparison to knowing Him and being known by Him and being found in Him. Stay strong, keep standing, keep walking and praising our God until the day comes when we shall praise Him for all eternity...............bro Frank

I am overwhelmed at all of your replies to my story. Each one of you blessed me more than you will ever know. I never expected this outpouring of love, understanding, compassion and acceptance. When I finally had the courage to push the "send" button I said "well Jesus, it's in your hands now." I have so much more insight and faith now that I know I am truly on this narrow path. It's not just all confusion in my head. I feel like a tremendous burden has been lifted. Light has come! All of you have given me a huge amount of courage to keep going. Step after step every day no matter the pain or suffering because this IS my purpose in life..to glorify Him only. I've wondered my whole life what my purpose was for being here; most especially these last few years. Now I know... I really know. It has nothing to do with me at all! It's all about Him! Sometimes I would think..Jesus.. I'm in my mid sixties, give me a break! And now, I reached out of my very reclusive place and got a whole new family! I love every single one of you. Thank you Frank, Jasmine, Neil and Savannah. Your words of encouragement are life giving. I will never forget this day!

In Him,
