Greetings

I am posting because I am curious if any others here plan to see the movie "Risen" coming out this weekend? I have watched the trailer and am interested in seeing it.

Here is a trailer if you are interested

We plan to but not certain.

Greetings Tim

My husband first found this movie and would like to see it. I admit the story intrigues me as well. The idea of coming at that BIBLE narrative through the eyes of an unbelieving roman solider is interesting to me. As I watched the trailer I was really struck by the last two lines, where the solider is asked what frightens him...and he replies, "being wrong and wagering eternity on it"

IF you should see it I would very much love to hear your thoughts on it.

God bless

I will post if we see it. I've been very disappointed with every movie I've ever seen about these things except for the Passion of the Christ, which I know has its own problems.

I watched the trailer... can't help notice that Jesus was crucified on a "T" rather than a standard cross in the crucifixion scene?

Yuehan-

Ben Hur was the same way I believe. One of movies not sure which depicts the cross as being attached to a scaffold type structure. How do we know exactly what the cross looked like? I am not sure if it matters.

Historically, some sources describe the Roman cross as "T" shaped. Maybe they used both kinds.

Found this. http://coldcasechristianity.com/2014/what-was-the-shape-of-jesus-cross/

Well since Luke 23:38 says that the inscription was "over" Jesus, I would assume some thing must be able to make it so. Possibly the top of the cross? Not that it is of vital importance to me that it not be a "T", but that is always what I go to when yon Jehovah's Witnesses try to tell me that I am a big time heretic because I think the cross was shaped like ”

But I would also like to see this movie. I heard about it from Janet Partial on the radio and have been looking forward to it since.

Havok- I thought the same thing about the inscription.

If you google "Ben hur crucifixion" and look at images, it shows a T shaped cross with the inscription sticking up from the top like a sign.

I will probably see it but will likely wait for a Guinea pig I trust to see it first and tell me how it is :)

An old college buddy of mine is an editor for a Christian magazine. He is also a freelance writer for another widely known Christian magazine. He is at the Risen premiere tonight. He had a red carpet interview with Joseph Fiennes. He says the movie is really awesome. But with all respect to him, he thinks a lot of things are awesome that really aren't. :)

I most definitely plan on seeing it this weekend or the next!! If I have to go by myself, I will!

This doesn't come out of a spirit of dislike, I do like you but I have to challenge what is written here!

Todd, you start most of the craziest threads / conversations on SI but yet, you'll going to "wait" for a guinea pig you trust?

I can't resist, Tim, :) ... I bet you know exactly what is awesome from that pedestal of yours, right?!! :)

Please don't take offense and God bless ya!!!

This is not a Christian movie, this is a Hollywood movie from Sony Pictures & Columbia (who is owned by Sony) and Affirm Films (who is also owned by Sony).

If you liked WAR ROOM, HEAVEN IS FOR REAL, WHEN THE GAME STANDS TALL, COURAGEOUS and SOUL SURFER then you may just like this movie. Because AFFIRM Films put out those movies as well!

Know what you are seeing. The rating is "PG-13: Biblical Violence including Some Disturbing Images."

God bless

Well I had in mind a dear friend and Christian brother who is very strong in the Lord and who usually will go see a movie like this right when it comes out. I never go opening weekends because I hate a crowded theater. I trust his judgment- if he says it's worthwhile I'll go see it. Otherwise I may wait for the DVD.

IMO!!!

Risen is:

Well acted
Nicely located
Entertaining
Wholesome as far as that goes for a movie night
Not nearly as violent as the rating suggests

Risen is not:

All that accurate historically or biblically
Particularly compelling as a story
Helpful theologically
An evangelistic tool (although by the time your local evangelical church shows it on their congregational community movie night, it will be weakly promoted as one)

Risen did

Take an interesting angle by making this CSI Judea set on thte day and weeks following the crucifixion of Jesus
Cast Pontius Pilate and the lead character VERY well
Sacrifice biblical accuracy to enhance poignancy
Make what I consider to be a serious booboo that I will let each of you who sees it judge for yourself

My takeaway: A movie that had a more dramatic trailer than the plot itself. The writers could not find a way to be compelling without sacrificing (or, to be kinder, compromising) two rather important biblical historical points. It was not horrible. It was just not better than okay. The acting saved it from the writing, and maybe even from the concept itself. I suspect churches will latch onto it and make it a "we gotta go see this because we are good Christians and this improves the culture" kind of a deal.

The thing that the sneaky cynic inside me won't let go of: This might be a bridge movie to open a door to less subtle .... or to equally subtle but more frequent .... movie-told stories that undermine the Scripture. I won't condemn Risen that harshly on its own. But, should Sony make a profit on this movie even through DVD sales, it might encourage other seemingly benign efforts that take similar liberties with some profound, immutable truths of God and present a different Jesus than even pop culture Christians would recognize if they have any base of Scriptural knowledge.

I wonder when the "Risen" bible and study guide will be published?

sermonindex Feb 29, 2016

I just saw the movie Risen. Yes I know it is not biblically accurate. But at least it was not being cynical toward the biblical account of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The movie depicted a Gentile who was trying to reconcile his physical world with the reality of the risen Christ. In a sense that is what we all go through when we come face to face with the Risen Savior.

Anyway I will not say much more because I do not want to spoil it for anyone who would like to see it. Or who has not seen it. But it is an excellent movie. Very much worth seeing.
