The Master's Call.......A Cowboy Ballad

sermonindex Apr 13, 2016

I normally do not get into Cowboy ballads. But one day I was searching some YouTube videos and came across this song by Marty Robbins. The title of the video is The Master's Call.

I had listened to some of Marty Robbins years ago. He is best known for his Ballad of the Alamo. But being intrigued by the title I listened to The Master's Call. At the end of the video I found myself in tears. Each time I listen to the video I still fun to hear is coming to my eyes.

I'd like you to listen to this video. For it is the story of a cowboy. But I do not want to say anymore. I do not want to spoil the story.

Set your search protocol for Marty Robbins, The Master's Call. For I believe this cowboy story is our story. I cannot help but think it was also the story of Marty Robbins himself.

Posted for your edification.

Lyrics from The Master's Call by Marty Robbins

When I was but a young man wild and full of fire
A youth with in my teens but full of challenge and desire
I ran away from home and left my mother and my dad
I knew it grieved them to think that their only boy was bad

I fell in with an outlaw band their names were known quite well
How many times we plundered I could not tell
This kind of sinful living leads only to a fall
I learned that much and much more that night the night I heard my Master's call

One night we wrestled cattle a thousand head or so
And started them out on the trail that leads to Mexico
But a northern started blowing and lightning flashed about
I thought someone was calling me I thought I heard a shout

And at that moment lightning struck not 20 yards from me
And left there was a giant cross where once stood a tree
And this time I heard a voice, a voice so sweet and strange
A voice that came from everywhere, a voice that called my name

So frightened I was thinking of sinful Deeds I done
I fail to see the thousand head of cattle start to run
The cattle they stampeded were running all around
My pony ran but stumbled and threw me to the ground

I felt the end was near that death would be my price
When a mighty bolt of lightning showed the face of Jesus Christ
And I cried out Lord forgive me don't let it happen now
I want to live for you Oh God these words I found

My Wicked past unfolded I thought of wasted years
When another bolt of lightning killed a hundred head of steers
And others rushed on by me and I was left to live or die
The Master had a reason life was His to take or give

A miracle performed that night I wasn't meant to die
The dead ones from the barricade least six or seven high
And right behind these was I afraid but safe and sound
I cried and begged for mercy, kneeling upon the ground

A pardon I was granted my sinful soul set free
No more to fear the angry waves upon life's stormy seas
Forgiven by the love of God that will remain
I gave my life and soul the night to Savior called my name

I cannot help but think that these are the words of a sinful man who was hellbound. These are the words of a simful man who was found by the Lord Jesus Christ. I cannot help but feel this is the gospel being presented to a hell deserving sinner who finds pardon and redemption in the Lord Jesus Christ.

But in a sense. This is my story. And I think this would be all of her stories. For we too have been found by Christ and set free through his blood.

Actually the ballad is more powerful if you listen to it.

Nor have I Todd. I had not heard of this until a few months ago. Found it in a Google search when I was looking for something else.

But clearly a ballad that tells a redemptive story. I always get tears in my eyes when I listen to it.

Loved it. I like C&W music from the 1960s too.

Never heard of that before now. That's very good. He must have known something of salvation to write and sing like that. Have you noticed that you can understand the words in most country music?
