This is a story about pre-marriage counseling that could possibly help in the marriage counseling sessions? I had a professor at college who described going to marriage counseling with his wife and the counselor asked them to write down five things each that other could expect from them.
And when they went over each others list one of his was, "you can expect me to play 5 hours of tennis a day." At the time, he wanted to be a tennis pro and his bride had no clue that he played that much tennis and she said, "Wow, glad you told me!!" And one of her expectations was, "I expect you to take me out once a week every week." And he said (at that time) that they had never missed that 20 years later!
Actually, what this did was "set expectations" with each other. And isn't that what usually brings folks into marriage counseling; they feel they have been slighted in some way, they expected one thing and yet got something entirely different.
God bless you as you try to help this couple!
