Sermons and workbooks to help young married couples?

sermonindex Apr 14, 2016

Hi brothers and sisters,
Can any of you recommend any really good sermons for newly weds who are struggling in their marriage?

Also I am looking for a workbook that I can take them through. Anyone used anything or heard of anything they can recommend?

Good subject!

Ray Stedman has the best teachings on marriage I have ever found. You can find them on this site or maybe easier to navigate the titles on pbc.org/Ray Stedman.

I'll see if I can retrieve a couple links for you to get you started.

This is a story about pre-marriage counseling that could possibly help in the marriage counseling sessions? I had a professor at college who described going to marriage counseling with his wife and the counselor asked them to write down five things each that other could expect from them.

And when they went over each others list one of his was, "you can expect me to play 5 hours of tennis a day." At the time, he wanted to be a tennis pro and his bride had no clue that he played that much tennis and she said, "Wow, glad you told me!!" And one of her expectations was, "I expect you to take me out once a week every week." And he said (at that time) that they had never missed that 20 years later!

Actually, what this did was "set expectations" with each other. And isn't that what usually brings folks into marriage counseling; they feel they have been slighted in some way, they expected one thing and yet got something entirely different.

God bless you as you try to help this couple!

I've never perused this particular book myself, but William Backus' "Telling Each Other the Truth" has had good reviews.

Generally, Backus' writings have a good focus on issues such as idolatry and wrong beliefs (about God, about self, about others).

Thanks sister Lyda, that's a wonderful story and I will use it in our sessions.

I personally don't consider myself a very good counsellor but this couple are desperate and open to change. They rushed into marriage imho and they are both very young and insecure. But they have admitted they need help and they need Life...Jesus!

I am looking forward to what He will do in them both. Blessings!

There are a lot of wise brothers and sisters on this forum so I will share a little more about this couples marriage in the hope that you guys will pray for them. Also if you feel to share some advice I will digest it and pass it on.

The young man is very quiet and insecure and struggles to show affection. He also struggles with lust. He isolates himself from other believers and will not open up to others, major trust issues.

The young women is also very immature and has major insecurities. She has huge trust issues with him and is terribly fearful that he doesn't love her and might be interested in other women. She struggles to let go of the past and forgive him. She has major issues with renewing her mind. I could go on and on. Basically this couple are just as bad as each other and that fuels many fires. But they want to change so that is a good thing. I am fully confident that the Lord is going to do major things in their hearts and their marriage.

Thank you to those of you who commitment to pray for them. Their names are Jane and Ken. Blessings!

Sister Jackie Kenaston the wife of Bro Denny said that this book helped to revolutionize her marriage.

I have both friends and family who say the same thing after reading her book.

Awakened,

Backus passed away before Youtube became popular, so I'm not aware of any video teachings on the Internet.

His books reflect his background as a practising psychologist - they are peppered with real case studies, as well as practical tips. You can preview the books on Amazon, or books.google.com.

Yes, that is Milt's wife. She has a nice approach (gift) in her teaching. When my kid's were young they enjoyed her vids.

Mark,

Rejoice Ministries is also very worthwhile. Even though it is a ministry involved in restoring marriages is has great value for couples planning to marry. Some "rubber meets the road", stories and truth here.

https://www.rejoiceministries.org/bible-study-online/

And here is a men's devotional.
https://www.rejoiceministries.org/standing-firm-men-devotional/

This site really helps young men and women count the cost of entering into marriage. The same way we should count the cost in following Jesus.
