When I first started participating in Christian internet forums about 6 years ago, I was shocked at how badly people naming the name of Christ behaved toward one another””furiously hurling proof texts, copying and pasting and copying and pasting and consigning one another to hell over doctrinal differences.
But then I found myself joining in the buffoonery. I would insult and make fun of people, spend a ridiculous amount of time honing a paragraph full of cutting words until it was razor-sharp, then checking every five minutes to see if any of my adversaries had responded.
I came to realize that this behavior was as sinful as it was childish, and repented. But then I did it again. And repented again. And did it again. And repented again...
So I found that, in my case, doctrinal brawling is an addictive behavior, and I know that I am not the only one. Some of the most belligerent posters are in the habit of announcing at regular intervals that they are "leaving the forum” because they are sick of the divisiveness and disunity and hatred””but a few days later they jump right back in the fray. They cannot stay away from the ring for long.
I will leave it to philosophers to philosophize about why Dogma Wars are as addictive as video games, or why it is so easy to hide behind Internet anonymity and behave like a lout. The bottom line is that if we have hearts full of bitterness and sectarian pride IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW GOOD OUR THEOLOGY IS.
"And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." - 1 Corinthians 13:2
