Dying to Self by Keith Green

Great fluffy muffins! I can't express how blessed I am by this sermon! It was like being lovingly spoon-fed by the Father in an intimate, one-on-one conversation where His eyes never left mine.

I want to say that it "answers so many questions" but that's not quite what I'm trying to say. Over the years, I've gained so much head knowledge that it's like those "bricks of knowledge" have been used to build up walls I never knew existed. Now, one by one, all of those bricks of knowledge are falling from my head into my heart. The walls are coming down and the freshest, sweetest smelling breeze is rushing in and refreshing me. Everything is starting to make perfect sense and suddenly nothing God is asking of me is remotely unreasonable! I feel like I'm being let in on an inside secret that very few people ever really hear.

I can't stop thinking about this and I want to know more about what the scriptures mean about dying to yourself.

Is there a fine line between dying to self and taking it to extremes? I know the normal tendency is to not completely die to self, but how about going in the other direction? I'm more prone to be extreme, due to my old, perfectionistic nature and feeling like I always had to prove myself. (I've had more than enough of that nonsense!)

I think this is going to take time, prayer and fasting so as to do this through the Holy Spirit instead of my own understanding and my own strength. (I've had more than enough of that, too.)

I'd be grateful to hear other thoughts on the subject; especially if you've taken the time to listen to this message.

I have not heard the sermon you posted but Brother Zac Poonen speaks a lot about Dying to one self. I would suggest you to search for his sermons on this topic in youtube.

There is no extreme in dying to one self. You are either dead to your self or alive. Without death there is no resurrection. Only through the resurrection of dead God's power will be demonstrated in us. If we do not have the resurrected life then we will always be devoid of his power.

The Lord recently showed me that Dying to one self is not just in the area of Sin but also in the area of things that are rightfully overs. Are we willing do dye in our rights?

A good verse to pray for more understanding about.

Rom 6:11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Best to read all of chapter 6,7 and 8 for context.

Linda,

The link I gave is for SermonIndex's YouTube channel where both parts were put together. But yes, the links you posted are the same as the one I posted. As far as listening to it, you just keep at what the Holy Spirit has placed in front of you if it's not this at the moment! I just wanted to share it because it absolutely blessed my socks off!

To be honest, it was Part One that really blessed and spoke to me. Part Two, in all honesty, isn't about dying to self, as far as I could tell.

Sreeram,

Yes, Keith Green goes into that and does it in a way that makes so much sense that your willingness to fully die to self is very likely to increase by leaps and bounds!

Julius,

No doubt about it! Romans seems to be an accompanying theme in my life right now!

I didn't listen to those sermons (yet) but I believe this is the most important topic in our Christian life!
The devil said already in the Garden of Eden that it is ok to disobey God "and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
This desire to be like God is still in us.
Dying to self is a life long learning and Julius is right we need to read several chapters to get a deeper understanding.
In Romans 7 Paul struggled and said many times "I..." In Rom 8 he talked about "the Spirit..."

In Gal 2:20 he writes: I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me

This all sounds very familiar and simple, but it is another test when we listen to new sermons and examine them..
Recently there was a discussion about a certain Pastor, that some agreed with and others disagreed.
Here is what I found on His website:

he "believes the best in people and is committed to helping them discover how they can reign in life through the abundance of grace..."

"In exchange for all the pain, suffering and lack that are so prevalent in the fallen world, you can look to your Daddy God and confidently expect His blessings of health, provision and protection..."

Discernment is needed here!

Do we crucify ourselves, or is that already accomplished by Christ?

Are we trying to die, or are we already dead?

Some verses to consider - note the tenses: Colossians 3:3-4, Romans 6:3-8, Galatians 2:20 (link: http://bit.ly/1TaygSl)

Quote from Austin-Sparks' "The School of Christ":

"We have not to die; we are dead. What we have to do is to accept our death. Failing to see that, we shall all the time be struggling to bring ourselves to death. It is a position taken which is God's settled, fixed and final position so far as we are concerned. That is the meaning of reckoning yourself dead...

Well, now, baptism is that altar where God regards us as having died in Christ, and we simply step in there and say, That position which God has settled with reference to me is the one which I now accept, and I testify here in this way to the fact that I have accepted God's position for me, namely, that in the Cross I have been brought to an end."

This has blessed me tremendously. I especially like the commentary by Andrew Murray.

BTW TrueWitness - I appreciate the testimony which you shared some weeks ago on a different thread. I can identify with parts of your journey.

I've also enjoyed many of your posts. Glad to see you back here posting more regularly these days.
