Pious sayings vs holiness, sayings that have no scriptural basis

It is amazing when you listen to preachers using sayings that have no scriptural basis ,I only use the bible or let go and let god or other phrases that have no scriptural basis
As working in the Christian bookshop as I used to work in there , how have we like the Jews made fences for the scriptures especially in the areas of relationships and other issues.

John 17:14 & 15:- I have given them Your word and the world has hated them; FOR THEY ARE NOT OF THE WORLD, just as I am not of the world. I am not asking that You take them OUT of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one.

I believe it is in the scripture that I have quoted above. Jesus prayed that we the disciples of him are not of the World. He also prayed that we are not to be taken out of the World, so it means that we are to be in the world but still not of the world.

So this phrase is derived from scripture.

I believe we will be fooled if we compare phrases to be scriptural or not. We should be able to discern the spirit. Satan quoted exact scriptural phrases to tempt Jesus (Luke 4) but Jesus balanced him with Scripture.

So Jesus was interested in the spirit of the Word that is why he prevented himself from deception by Satan who was quoting scriptural phrases. We also should know God and his heart and discern things using His Spirit.

Letter kills but spirit gives life.

And remember, God helps those who help themselves.

Derivations of scripture is not scripture , it is amazing that when you read the Bible a few times around , the amount of quotes taken out of context even when quoting the letter kills but the spirit gives life has to be taken in the context of scripture
Even among main preachers such as Paul washer it normally becomes useful life experience rather than scripture
Whilst i was in Canterbury I knee many people who had theology degrees who were say buddist but that does not excuse the illiteracy of scripture among belivers
Just becuase the devil quoted scripture it is a stupid argument to supposed Christians should not
If you look at the dialogue of the early church fathets they verbosley quoted scripture that if we lost the new testament we could put together most of the new testament from them , I would have to look up the source of this
The illiteracy rate is terrible when people like Jehovah witnesses or Muslims knkw more of the scriptures than most people in church do
Churches have become full of clichés with no grounding in scripture if you look at all the most popular book in christiandom

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" is a classic example.

Part of discerning, is recognizing omission's, Omissions are a tactic of the enemy.
we know this from Scriptures such as Luke 4,
satans version of Psalms 91:11 omitted a very important part of the verse, in which by the omittion the understanding was misconstured and used as a temptation, had satan not omitted part of the verse, his misconstrued application would not have worked.

Let's not argue over words. I agree there are some sayings in Christendom that have no scriptural basis, but the majority of the ones listed are not inaccurate biblically.

I agree biblical literacy is seriously lacking, but the examples that we are giving here seem to be legitimate sayings that are acceptable.

Remember that Paul said this: "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord..."

Yes, let's quote scripture. DEFINITELY! But hymns and spiritual songs are not scripture and are written by us. They may lack the inspiration that the scriptures have, but that doesn't mean they are totally untrue. We ought to examine everything, but just because it isn't a quote from the Bible doesn't mean Satan invented it.

On another note: The church has problems for sure. And we need men with grit inside the churches to address it, but let's be really careful about saying stuff that sounds like, "oh those other Christians who don't know any better, they are so blind and ignorant of the truth."

Not saying we shouldn't do loving, biblical church discipline, but we can't be disregarding or diminishing or verbally destroying wide swaths of the Church with generalizations.

I used to be the king of doing that. I still catch myself doing it now. But if I truly believe that God is faithful to fulfill his promises to us, then I believe he can bring other believers to completion and I can focus on walking with him and addressing error biblically.

terms that are not Scripture do affect the way people understand the Scripture.

terms such as "sinful nature" "we need to die to ourselves daily" "God helps those whom help themselves" etc. do have effects on our understandings

Black dog,wolf / white dog,wolf : whom you feed the most will be in control

supposedly an old cherokee indian teaching that modern Christians often use to teach sanctification.

add : Romans 5,6,7 teach such a superior form of sanctification to that of the above method, and one that is not interchangable with other religions.

Charity begins at home.

Clean hands, pure heart.

This one is never mistaken from Scripture but it is just as good as the others that aren't: If you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas .

I'm gaining a lot out of this thread and really appreciate it. It's very practical and applicable to where I'm at right now because I'm examining my entire life under the microscope of the scriptures and His light. This gives me yet another area to examine. It's not been fun or easy by any means, but it's been absolute cause for JOY!

Yet another way God is using SermonIndex and it's members to affect His kingdom... and I'm grateful.
