Truth, and the twelve angry man

sermonindex Jun 26, 2016

Last week I watched this old movie "The twelve angry men" with my daughter. She likes movies about court cases, and I thought this was one of those. To my surprise it was much more or rather something else. It was about how much these twelve people with various background and character are ready to receive truth, and admit that they were wrong (deceived). Also the movie explored what was behind some of the stubborn rejections of truth. It was interesting to see how some people were completely uneffected by the facts. And the movie pictured well the patience and compassion of the person who tried to communicate the truth and the anger and ignorance of those who unreasonably rejected it.
Although I had seen this movie long time ago, It was fresh and relevant to me this time, I kept thinking of Christians, deception, truth, forums, etc. ...
If you have some time, I recommend to watch it.

... And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they RECEIVED NOT THE LOVE THE TRUTH, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
(2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 KJV)

These verses stand true for people in all walks of life, Christian, non-believers, liberals, conservatives...

It was interesting to see how some people were completely uneffected by the facts.

Exactly!! Because we have our own agenda!!

Here is an awesome sermon by Zac Poonen

When I tell my teenage children about the lies of this world (they are not christians) saying:"...But they are lying to you! ....Don't you care?" They say: "We don't, no one can know the truth or whether there is any, maybe you are lying to us right now there is no way for us to know..."
But for us believers is given to know the truth, yet sometimes we look like these unbelieving children.
This movie shows that it is natural to (even honest) men not to have the personal responsibility to seek for truth. The movie inspires us that we should use the facts, evidence, our faculties (common sense, logic, experience), intuition and each others' help to find out the real truth, and not to be satisfied with the shallow appeareance of it. As we do that, we will have great struggles and finally victory over all the hinderances such as unforgiveness, prejudice, ignorance, accusations, hyppocricy, and love is the motor that drives us through all. It shows that our resistance to the truth is rooted in our reluctance to face these things within ourselves, and it takes time, effort and the loving and patient persuasion of others to engage in this serious affair of seeking truth.

Lysa, I listened to the sermon. Brother ZP says (my summary) if we love the truth more than our self interest, God will lead us to more truth. He exhorts us to honor the truth and God by being truthful in every little thing. And there is a lot more practical advice about seeking truth and avoiding deception.
This sermon is stuffed with wisdom, a must hear for those interested in finding truth.
