Haggai 2:9

'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says the Lord of hosts,' and in this place I will give peace,' declares the Lord of hosts."

Haggai 2:9 is often quoted as a verse that God will do a worldwide revival in the end times. When I was involved in the IHOP movement briefly this was one of their theme verses. That the latter glory would be greater than the first glory. All of this preceding the return of Jesus Christ.

This morning I woke up and the thought came into my mind that we are in the latter glory. What Jesus accomplished on His cross by bringing in the New Covenant through His sacrificial death. The latter glory of God was released upon His body. The latter glory has come by the Holy Spirit dwelling in the hearts of his people in the church. That is the spiritual bride of Christ.

The Lord says and Hagee 2:9 that the latter glory all the house will be greater than the first. We are the latter glory of the house. Consider Ephesians 2:19-22,

... So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole building being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple of the Lord, and whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit...

Brothers and sisters we are the latter glory of the house of God. Paul writes about this in Colossians 1:25-27,

... Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, that is the mystery of which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but now has been manifested to his saints, in whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory...

The glory of God is Jesus dwelling in the hearts of His people by faith in the church by His Holy Spirit. Paul sums it up so beautifully in his prayer in Ephesians 3:14-19,

... For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up in all the fullness of God...

Dear saints this should astound and amaze us. As we say in Arkansas we should be spellbound and amazed. That Jesus Christ in His glory dwells in us both individually and corporately.

Then why are we praying for a 'visitation' of "latter glory' when when we are the latter glory? The latter glory is Jesus Himself dwelling in our midst, living in our hearts by His Holy Spirit? We might say this is His present glory on us. This is the glory of the New Covenant.

What we should be praying for is to be a 'habitation' of His glory. We should be praying to be vessels of His glory. But that will be another post or another thread.

I close with Ephesians 3:20-21. This so beautifully sums up the latter glory,

... Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to His power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen...

This truly is posted from the foot of His cross and my heart is leaping up and down in a Holy Ghost revival.

Lord Jesus please write this precious truth upon our hearts that we are the vessels of your glory living in us. Hallelujah to the Lamb that was slain.

The time context of the verse and what nation and group of people it was spoken to have to be taken into account in my opinion to get a understandfing of what is being spoken of. If former glory being replaced by a greater glory is going to occur then a shaking of all things even in the heavens and a shaking of the nations is going to have to occur first.

6 For thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Once more in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea also and the dry land.

7 I will shake all the nations; and they will come with the wealth of all nations, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the Lord of hosts.

8 The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the Lord of hosts

9The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts, and in this place I shall give peace, declares the Lord of hosts (Haggai 2:6-9)

This shaking is found in Hebrews also,

26 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN."

27 And this expression, "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

29 For our God is a consuming fire. (Hebrews 12:26-29)

Christ had a bit to say regarding this time,

29 But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and THE POWERS OF THE HEAVENS WILL BE SHAKEN,

30 and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth shall mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. (Matt 24:29-30)

So we can see that this "greater glory" filling the house can't be before and preceding the return of Christ. All Hebrew prophets recorded in the Scriptures have been 100% totally accurate so if the divinely inspired prophet Haggai is to be believed then a shaking of the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land will occur first (Haggai 2:6). This time of shaking and trouble is the final time of trouble the earth and its inhabitants will undergo - the final tribulation - just preceding Christ's return. All things will once again be shaken so that that which cannot be shaken will remain. THEN, the latter glory of this house will be greater than the former. And this prophecy in Haggai about the latter and former glory filling the house was made to the nation of Israel to which Christ will return to. The temple and tabernacle of David is going to be rebuilt during these days and therefore this glory filling the house pertains to these edifices to be constructed again at the return of Christ. It does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to diminsh or do away with the fact that the church is now spritual temple. See Isaiah 16:4-5, Amos 13-15. In Amos 9:13-15 the end result of the tabernacle of David being restored is that,

15 "I will also plant them again on thier land, and THEY WILL NOT AGAIN BE ROOTED OUT FROM THEIR LAND which I have given them," says the Lord your God.

A permanent place in the land never to be rooted out again will be when the temple is built again and the latter glory that fills it then will be greater than any former glory. It happens after the final shaking of the heavens and earth at the end of this prersent evil age.

Many times innocently and somewhat naively the Gentile influence in the church has stripped these verese such as is found in Haggai and given them a universal spiritual meaning that nullifies the original meaning. Isaiah 60:1-3 is another such set of passages,

1 "Arise, shine; for your light has come,
And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

2 "For behold, darkness will cover the earth
And deep darkness the peoples;
But the Lord will rise upon you
And His glory will appear upon you.

3 "Nations will come to your light,
And kings to the brightness of your rising.

That passage is not about God's glory rising on a end time church. You can preach that from the passage by making a spiritual illustration. Yet first and foremost, the passage is about the glory that will rise and be seen on a redeemed and glorified Jerusalem (Zion) at the return of Christ. "But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear on you." Then the latter glory of God's house will be greater than the former. Doing away with the Israelitish context of these prophecies was many times done almost inadvertently and naively but still the damage to proper prophetic understanding has been more than a little significant.

Bear, I agree with you. It is the manifestation of Christ in His Church made up of all people in complete unity and love holding fast to the Head.

He is the glory of the latter house (Church) and all nations have been shaken throughout the last 2,000 years and continue to be.

Acts 15:15-17
And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.

The Lord has been building the tabernacle of David (Church) for 2,000 years and man has been building, too. Two churches but only one is the true Church that contains the "glory of God", Jesus Christ.

It was prophesied He wouold shake the earth one more time and the heavens also. If He has shaken the earth for 2,000 years have the heavens also been shaken?

The restoration of the tabernacle of David has begun because Gentiles are now allowed to come under the government of God through Christ. Yet it ends in Israel being placed again in their land never to be moved again.

11 On that day I will raise up the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down, and repair its damages; I will raiseup its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old.

14 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and all the Gentiles who are called by My name," says the Lord who does this thing.

13 "Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord,
"When the plowman will overtake the reaper
And the treader of grapes him who sows seed;
When the mountains will drip sweet wine
And all the hills will be dissolved.

14 "Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,
And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them;
They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit.

15 "I WILL ALSO PLANT THEM ON THEIR LAND, AND THEY WILL NOT AGAIN BE ROOTED OUT FROM THEIR LAND WHICH I HAVE GIVEN THEM," says the Lord your God.

The elephant sitting in the room - if the Lord is literally rebuilding the fallen tabernacle of David why wouldn't He also keep His word and literally plant them again in their land never to be rooted out again? Why would the first part of the verses, rebuilding the fallen tabernacle, be literal when the last part of the verses, being planted again in their land, be a spiritual occurrence? What's good for the goose seems like it would be good for the gander.

Brother I cannot answer the particulars of your questions. But based on the truth of the letter to the Ephesians. Are the new covenant believers the spiritual temple of God? Is Christ living in the spiritual temple of God through the hearts of His people? Is he not doing this by the Holy Spirit? Is this not the greater glory that God speaks of in the temple?

I do not think that one can deny the rich truth that God is speaking about his bride as laid out in the book of Ephesians. Particularly when you look at at Ephesians 3:20-21. And the last verse Paul speaks now to Him be the GLORY in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. And to that Ithat I would say Amen.

John 17:22

The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as we are one,

Earlier a brother and I were talking about the latter glory and he reminded me of the above verse in John where Jesus prays His high priestly prayer. It seems in the above verse He is praying for that latter glory for His little flock. It would appear that Jesus is praying that His bride would have that glory that God has given to His Son.

Rich truth to reflect on.

Well, why not good bro? The mere five verses are right there before us in Amos 9:11-15. I don't say that to be a smart aleck but it just doesnt seem hard to determine if part of these verses are to be interpreted literally and if the latter part of them are to be interpreted figuratively.

Acts 15:6-18 cannot be uncoupled from the totality of the prophecy by Amos regarding the same thing. The prophecy recorded by Amos and referred to in Acts 15 starts with the rebuilding of the tabernacdle of David and ends with Israel being planted in their land again never to be removed. Correct me if I'm wrong that these verses don't say that.

In Haggai, God was speaking in a post-tribulational setting. The glory spoken of there comes after the tribulation and second advent of Christ. The Spirit will be poured out on Israel then as prophesied along with all mankind. It is not a description of the church presently being full of glory because it is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The glory you speak of in the body and bride of Christ now is a separate issue fron the glory that will inhabit Israel after the second advent of Christ. Yet they will be believers then and this always brings the Spirit and where the Spirit is there is always glory. As I stated before, this does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to nullify the present reality that the church now has glory because of the Spirit within. Yet the events Haggai prophesied of belong to the age to come. Isaiah 60:1-3 speaks of the age to come also but has been influenced by Gentile supercessionists assumptions to bolster its own view of the church minus the Israelitish context Isaiah 60:1-3 was prophesied in.

As believers we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit yet we go to a church building on Sundays and Wednesdays maybe to meet with the Lord and our brethren. You might hear something like, "Was God in the service? Did the Spirit show up?" Well, of course it showed up if the Spirit is within all believers. Yet we say we go to a building to meet with God. In the same vein, what if the Israelis of that day in the age to come are full of the Spirit yet build a temple that will be a place where God's glory will be known and seen by the nations. Like the modern church, full of the Spirit yet meeting in church buildings, the nation of Christ's return will be saturated with God's Spirit but will choose to build a temple. It will do nothing to diminsh the reality of the Spirit within them. Of course the church of today is a spiritual temple. Absolutely! But how does that change what is to come for Israel? They are separate issues to occur at a time other than the days we are living in. Thus, Haggai's post-tribulational setting - THEN the glory of the latter house will be greater than the former house.

Again, the present spiritual temple of the church is a separate issue than the glory that will inhabit Israel and its temple after the second advent of Christ. The context of Haggai coupled with other verses and passages speaking of a final shaking speak clearly as to chronology. That a final shaking would occur involving the whole earth before Israel's final deliverance from its eschatological enemies was standard 101 Jewish eschatology.

latter rain is for the purpose of bringing
in the harvest.

The former glory came on the day of
Pentecost, Solomon's Temple represents
the former house or early church that was

filled Solomon's temple filled the upper
room when the Holy Spirit was poured

Zerubbabel's temple represents the "latter
House", which is a type of the church in

glory than the "former" or early church.

Greater works will be done as Jesus
said. This will all take place at a time

Those are all good thoughts even though not neessarily backed up by the scriptures themselves. You have ignored the post-tribulational context of Haggai's prophecy and make it all for the present church and have not said a word about the glory that will belong to Israel after the second advent of its Messiah who will return to the same nation that He ascended from. The Holy Spirit will be poured out in that day also because Israel will be a nation of believers living under the rule of their long departed but now returned Savior. You make it all about the church now, and there is glory now, yet ignore the Israelitish context the prophecy from Haggai was centered around. In doing so, you have basically advanced the same supercessionist view that has influenced much of Gentile hermeneutics to the point that it has come to develop supercessionsim as its standard model of canonical interpretation as far as Israel is concerned. And again, Haggai's prophecy is clearly post-tribulational in its content. Get that wrong and you get the prophecy wrong. Since the prophecy is post-tribulational it can't pertain to the church NOW. I have nothing against the church now of course but that is not what the prophecy is about.

Christ in you the hope of glory. Absolutely. Yet Christ will be in them in that day - their hope of glory. We're partaking now of what they will partake of in that day.

Brother please let us not turn this into a divisive thread where we are debating endtime eschatology. There have been enough of those on this forum. Presently there is a thread running arguing over whether Satan is presently bound or will be bound in the future.

You're certainly free to disagree with how I applied Haggai 2:9. If you want to argue your case then please open up a thread to do that.

The reason I opened up this thread on the latter glory is to show that the bride of Christ already has the glory. In other words there are those who are praying for revival for the glory of God to come down. When in actuality according to the truths Paul wrote about in His letter to the Ephesians. The bride already has the glory of Christ.

David the sum total of redemptive history is found in Jesus Christ and his death on the cross. What Jesus did on the cross was die for His bride so he might redeem her without spot or wrinkle. And the bride includes Jew and Gentile.

Also no man, Jew or gentle, can be saved apart from faith in Jesus Christ. Apart from accepting his atoning work on the cross. This is not Gentile Greek reasoning. This is spiritual truth as revealed by the holy spirit in the New Testament. The Book of John and Paul's letters to the Romans and the Galatians established that all men, Jew and Gentile, are all under sin. And that both Jew and Gentile need the atoning work of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Brother I would like to put this thread back on the original OP. That the bride of Christ already has the glory of Christ living within her. But ask how can we be the vessels of glory that are in His bride?

Thus I go back to my original question. Do we pray for a visitation of the Holy Spirit in revival. Or do we pray that we be the habitation of the Holy Spirit as we are the temple of Christ?

I certainly believe that and are in agreement with you. It's just that I see a post-tribulational setting to Haggai 2:9 and it concerns the nation Israel after the tribulation. These distinctions are worth noting in my opinion. It does nothing to diminish the present glory you speak of already present but contained to a large degree in the body of Christ. I'm repeating myself I know so I'll leave it there.

And I'm a bit baffled why you would include this in your reply. You say these things without explaining why you even brought them in and what is the reason for doing so. Do you fbelieve these things are something I'm not aware of? Did you perhaps feel a need to tell me these things because I believe Israel has a prophetic future? What made this come out of you to me. I'm not trying to be burr or contentiouis it's just that I'm in a serious disconnect here. It seems out of context and not connected to anything I said.

Getting back to the original OP is okay with me and I've gheard God is not a "revivalist" but an "abodist." When He comes He wants to stay and abide so the treasure is of course in earthern vessels.

Brother more and more I'm coming across gentile believers who say that Israel is the center of God's Redemptive history. They almost imply that us Gentiles are second-class citizens. But that the Jews are God's chosen people in heaven and us Gentiles or just kind of an afterthought.

Some even go as far as to say that Jews do not need to hear the gospel. But by virtue of their chosen relationship with God they will be saved. Not knowing where you were coming from in all this I felt the need to express what I expressed in my post.

I realize Israel will play a prominent part in the end times. I believe the prophecy that Jesus will descend and touch the Mount of Olives just as He was resurrected from the Mount of Olives.

But personally I do not believe that there will be a temple rebuilt in Israel with the restoration of the temple sacrifices. If so then we would have to abrogate the book of Hebrews. Actually I think some of the Jews would like to abrogate the book of Hebrews. Just my thoughts.

You may be right that Haggai 2:9 is supposed tribulation. I was only applying it prophetically in terms of the present glory of the church being greater than the glory of the first and second temples in Israel.

Anyway brother appreciate your post and thoughts. You might want to open up a thread and talk about the post tribulation of temple. I would certainly be interested in reading the responses. But then I would be to ignorant also to comment on it. This is just simply an area that I have not studied.

Anyway bro. As always these are my thoughts.

What i dont undersand with what your saying blain ,is if your born again ,the glory is allready in you ,why would you keep praying that the glory be made to come in you ,,,its allreay happened , and if your talking about a second blessing, like those who experenced it at pentacost , that was a revivle of the glory of the spirit ' so to pray for that glory is to pray for a biblical filling of the spirit of glory ,, that is revival my friend pure and simple .....

The Lord is speaking to His people, who, after the first excitement of coming to Him for forgiveness, when they are filled with joy and see Him in everything, devoting their whole selves to His service, join societies, go to Bible school, and seek His guidance in everything, slowly cool down.

Life goes on and they know they have fallen from their first love, and dearly want to return, but there are things now that seem to be in the way. So they decide that, once they finish Bible school, get their career well underway, have their marriage difficulties more sorted out, get their young children more independent, anything that takes up their energy and time, they will prioritise seeking Him. In the meantime they are 'building their own house' and neglecting that of the Lord.

Or perhaps they have just given up on that as things were much more difficult than they imagined. Family became an obstruction, disappointment added up, difficulties came from everywhere, and so they decided that 'in this world you will have troubles' and put their noses to the grandstone and just got on with it with the hope that life can go quickly and they have heaven to look forward to. In the meantime they just got colder and colder.

The Lord calls to His people to return unto Him and it is an recurring theme through the OT. They have crucified their Lord instead of being crucified WITH Him and if they will repent and humbly prostrate themselves, He will come again to rebuild His dwelling place within with it's altar, and fill the temple with His glory which shall shine all around.

"20In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD'S house shall be like the bowls before the altar. 21Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts."

He will cleanse the temple thoroughly, every little pot and pan will be made clean, in it's entirety and the glory of the Lord will no longer be dulled. The vessel will be holy and revived and His glory will be there for all to see and there will be peace in it.

This time, it will be even better than the first, as now they have been through the trials, they have found out just how little faith that hey have and how easily they abandon God. They now know themselves and their sins have been dealt with at the source, that is, now they have a pure heart and can serve God as He deserves to be served and worshipped. All Of Him and none fo us. Lord come quickly to your people and show them their sins. Amen.

I can appreciate the sentiments you expressed above and many of us have likely found ourselves experiencing such. I think that spiritual illustrations can be made from many passages yet in so doing it does not take away from or change the original meaning of a particular passage. Christ walking on water is a good example. It can be made into a spiritual illustration that God and Christ can walk upon the storms and trials of our life and can even bid us come and walk upon them with them. Yet it doesn't change the fact that Christ actually walked on the water. In this vein, I would point again to the post tribulational context of Haggai 2:9. Spiritual illustrations and teaching stories can be legitimately made from this verse but it doesn't change the original contect and meaning of the passage. This passage refers to post-tribulational Israel after the second advent of Christ and after "once more I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations" This final shaking is confirmed by Hebrews 12:26 and many other passages. So Haggai 2:9 can''t be referring to the present church or the trials of a believer where God fixes and molds them and circumstances and they are doing better in the Lord than they were at the beginning of their Christian walk. That will preach and edify but the furthest it can go would be making it a spiritual illustration taken from a passage describing something else. The passage refers to a time after Israel has been sifted among the nations (Amos 9:9) and has been placed again in their own land never to be rooted out again (Amos 9:15) after Christ returns to this land. I've gone on here and apologize if I have offended but the distinctions between a spiritual illustration being made from Haggai 2:9 and what the prophecy really is about and who it concerns are well worth bearing in mind and understanding in my opinion.
