God's Holy Demands
And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
Matthew 10:38
Christians can be very demanding people. They want everything from perfect nursery workers to a top-notch song leader. They demand a clean church but won’t take the time to pick up trash from the yard. They complain over the faulty church plumbing but won’t drop an offering in the plate to put in new fixtures. The list goes on and on.
But what about God’s demands? After all, He’s the one who formed us in our mother’s womb. He’s the one who has given us life. God is the Master Potter and we are the earthen clay. He is the one we will give an account to. Therefore, it would be good to know what He demands of us.
First of all, God demands a total allegiance to His person. That means He wants no other idols in your life. An idol is anything that takes the place of God in our lives. It can be sports, fame or money. Jesus even spoke of loving God more than family. For many, that is a strong demand, but it must be obeyed.
God also demands total allegiance to His cause. That means He expects you to spend your life speaking about His kingdom, not yours.
He also demands total allegiance to holiness. "Without holiness,” the Bible says, "no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14, NIV). It is not a suggestion that we be holy””it is a command.
So next time demands are being made to God, make sure His demands are being met first.
