Greetings!
This week, I was thinking about some of the epitaphs -- statements written on tombstones -- of ministers that I've been privileged to hear teach the Word of God. Epitaphs are often engraved on a tombstone or published in reference to someone's death.
Here are a few interesting epitaphs of ministers featured on SermonIndex as well as other ministers of the Gospel. If you can think of any others, please include them here!
Leonard Ravenhill:
"Are the things you are living for worth Christ dying for?"
David Wilkerson:
"A man who simply followed after the Lord's heart"
Keith Green:
"Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit. John 12:24"
Charles Spurgeon:
"Here lies the body of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, waiting for the appearing of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ"
Corrie ten Boom:
"Jesus is victor"
A. W. Tozer:
"A man of God"
Vance Havner:
"Evangelist, preacher, revivalist and author" (although he reportedly wanted it to read "Just a preacher").
Chuck Smith:
"Jesus never fails. For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down -- when we die and leave these bodies -- we will have a home in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. II Corinthians 5:1"
George Whitefield:
"I am content to wait till the judgement day for the clearing up of my reputation: and after I am dead I desire no other epitaph than this, 'Here lies G.W. What sort of man he was the great day will discover.'"
Major Ian Thomas:
"Christ died and rose again to live his life through us. John 11:25-26"
William Booth:
"Founder & 1st General of the Salvation Army.
Born 1829
Born Again of the Spirit 1845
Founded the Salvation Army 1865
Went to Heaven 20th August 1912"
