Pressing On
The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
Psalm 145:18,19
David Brainerd, missionary to the American Indians in the 1700s, was passionately devoted to seeking God. Many of his journal entries reveal a man who was first "after God’s own heart,” as we see here.
I was enabled in secret prayer to raise my soul to God, with desire and delight. It was indeed a blessed time. All my past sorrows seemed kindly to disappear, and I "remembered no more the sorrow, for joy.” O, how sweetly, and with what an affectionate tenderness the soul confides in the Rock of Ages, knowing He will "never leave it nor forsake it,” and that He will cause "all things to work together for good!” I longed that others should know how good a God the Lord is. My soul was full of tenderness and love””even to the greatest of my enemies. I longed that they should share in the same mercy. I loved the thought that God should so do as He pleased with me””and everything else. I felt peculiarly serious, calm, and peaceful, and felt encouragement to press after holiness as long as I live, whatever difficulties and trials may be in my way. May the Lord always help me to do so! Amen, and amen.
Our desire should be first and foremost to know God, and by so doing, His power and passion for the lost will flow through our lives. Make it your determined purpose today to press on after holiness””letting nothing steal your desire to know Him.
