Proverbs 13:12 (KJV)
12 Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
I have been meditating on these verses to understand their meaning as in what does "hope deferred" mean?
The Lord has impressed these verses on my heart as there have been many "hopes" deferred.
In times of bitter disappointment I have often thought of this verse, Prov. 13:12. I think it speaks of the dreams which we have that never seem to be realized. In contrast the fulfillment of a dream gives us new zest for living.
I used to wonder about the meaning of Hebrews 11:1 until I read the same verse in translations other than the KJV. I like Luther's German translation of this verse which I will try to paraphrase for you. "Faith is a sure confidence whereby man looks forward without doubting regarding those things that cannot be seen."
