Pls my beloved brethren, how can I overcome wandering spirit during prayer. My mind/spirit does wander a lot while praying and this hinders my prayer life.

Dear brother,

This wandering spirit during prayer is not an uncommon thing and can have many different causes. It could be that you have an overactive imagination that you need to take control of. The Word of God says that we are to cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. When you come to prayer brother, spend some time in praise and worship and reading the scripture. The Holy Spirit wants to lead you in your prayer time. Refuse every distraction that comes your way, and bring your focus back on the Lord as often as you need to. Prayer is a discipline and the flesh will war against the spirit, and you will think of all kinds of things that you need to be doing rather than praying. When you develop a disciplined prayer life and you exercise your faith through prayer, then it will become less and less of a struggle, and you will come to the place that being in the presence of God instead of being burdensome will become a great delight.

Happens to many, maybe most people.

I suppose you are talking about times when you are alone praying. I suggest you tell God you have this problem and then see what happens. If you are primarily concerned about performance, I suggest the problem goes deeper then that.

Just tell God - he knows more about this then you anyways - it will come as no surprise to him.

Prayer also happens when you study, meditate in the WORD...ever thought about that? Now, this gets exciting - really!

God bless.

Sandra

Both Mike and Sandra both gave excellent counsel. The truth is 30 plus years later I still have those times when focus is difficult. Praise and worship has been much help. I read a little book many years ago called"Practicing the Presence of God" by a french monk/cook?? named Brother Lawrence. That daily discipline of never leaving God s presence in dialogue and thought and acting accordingly has been a well spring of blessing throughout the years. While times set apart are rich I would recommend that you take The Lord with you and never really acknowledge that He is anywhere except where you are and talk with God all day long and listen for His voice. Than your quiet/more private times will be less distracting.

The best way to conquer a wondering mind is to settle your mind first by reading your Bible before prayer.
