"...the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?" (John 18:11)
A rhetoric question. But think about it! A father comes to his son and says, "Son, I want you to drink this!" -What is that father? "It is something bitter but it's chief end is healing." Do you think that a son would think - my father surely wants to poison me? Will not a father, especially a loving Father like our God, seek only the best for his own children? "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief"... but he does not stop here, it continues: "when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand" (Isaiah 53).
So must it be with us. When our Father comes and says, "Son/Daughter, drink this!", do we think He has rather made some mistake by giving us to drink something "unpleasant" for the flesh? When He calls us to take up the cross? Do we think that He is cruel to let us suffer? Or do we say like Jesus: "...the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?"
Shall I not drink it?! Is that not HIS will? Does not my Father know best and prepare for me that, which as it's chief end has something good, even the glory of God?!
So, shall I not drink it?!
