Brothers and Sisters, this is a very sensitive question and without throwing anyone under the bus, Id like to keep the situation as generic as possible. Godly counsel and wisdom is much needed here. The names of the people are made up to protect.
Over a year ago Sally and Rob went to Tina and Bens house for dinner and fellowship. Rob, Sallys husband, runs the sound system at church. Sally was seeking God for His will. Ben, Tinas husband, sings on the worship team. Tina runs overheads and is the women prayer leader.
During dinner, Sally leans back and catches Tina and Rob rubbing feet under the table in an inappropriate way. This was brought to leadership. The associate Pastor hears both sides. Tina and Rob both said it was harmless and playing , they repented and promised not to do it again. The Pastor told them it was stupid, and felt confident that they were honest and nothing more would come of it, so he allowed them to resume their ministry positions.
Sally was heart broken, but wanted to forgive and reconcile with Tina, so she bought a beautiful gift and gave it to Tina to show that she forgave.
Tina and Rob both shed many tears tears, said they were repentant and all seemed well.
About 7 months pass, by this time Sally has healed from this. Rob is convicted by the Lord and opens up to Sally that he and Tina were having an affair. He told her it began a few months before Sally caught them rubbing feet under the dinner table. He said he stopped for a short time after he and Tina repented, but they caved back into sin. Sally was devastated. Tina and Rob had lied to her.
This went to leadership again. Both said they repented. Rob voluntarily stepped down from ministry and left that church. Ben forgave Tina quickly without any heart break. The senior Pastor stepped down from his position and the associate Pastor who gave counsel initially was made the lead Pastor...and also just returned from a 3 month sabbatical. The elders were asked to take care of the situation.
Both couples were questioned separately. After hearing both sides, they came to the conclusion repentance was made, forgiveness was in the process, and Tina and Ben were given the Okay to resume ministry.
A lot of details were left out, however, enough info was given to give somewhat a clear picture of the situation.
Sally called Tina to ask her questions so she could have closure and heal. Sally asked Tina why she lied to her. Tina said she didn't lie, she just didn't give the whole truth. Tina told Sally she didn't commit adultery, then added that she only hugged and kissed him, exchanged inappropriate pictures, and shared explicit conversations with Rob.
This is the question Sally has: Leadership believes true repentance was made, so Tina can resume ministry as the womens prayer leader and working overheads. Sally is very concerned about this and has red flags. Since Sally and Rob no longer attend this church, should they walk away and leave it in the Lords hands? What would be the best biblical counsel in this? This is a very serious situation.
Sally has forgiven Rob and Tina, but is working through hurt, trusting the Lord.
Thank you and God bless,
