I am trying to remember the title and author of a Puritan work about how we need a spiritual or good interest, activity or desire to counteract or replace a carnal or sinful habit. I know many of you know it instinctively. Help me out here.

Are you referring to "Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices" by Thomas Brooks? It was published in 1652. It lists various devices by Satan and the remedies to counter them.
I do remember that Brooks wrote about the "saving interest in Christ."

Nice. I will have to look that one up. I know that the Banner of Truth trust used to have many old books.
The Thomas Brooks books are very good and surprisingly clear given their age. They almost sound like they could be preached word-for-words today and be just as relevant. Then again, I suppose that this is reflective of the eternal nature of truth.

He makes an excellent point. You can't just obliterate an inordinate affection or lust by sheer willpower alone. Nature abhors a vacuum. It must be supplanted by a greater love or desire, preferably of something wholesome and good. It is not a long essay. You can read it in under 30 minutes.
