I never realised, until now, that it was Herod who sent the wise men to Bethlehem, after he asked the chief priests and scribes where the Christ was to be born.
Interesting.
It begs the question why Herod did not just send soldiers then.
I guess, I don't know, but I guess it is because Herod didn't know where they were.
For he said, in verse 8, to go and search for the young Child and when you have found Him...
So I guess it was because he didn't know where Jesus was.

Herod could have simply had soldiers follow the magi from a distance.
Regardless, his duplicity is sickening.

The star must have had disappeared from their view when the wise men reached Jerusalem or would they have asked: ”Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." (Matt. 2:2)?
After they left Herod, the star re-appeared to guide them to Jesus (Matt. 2:8-9).

Perhaps..... Herod must have been a very proud man, an authoritarian, and, as king fully expected the wise men to obey him? But another King, infinitely greater than him, had been born.

Just think:
Herod, with the best Bible scholars (the scribes) to enlighten him, killed a whole town of infants and still missed Jesus.
The wise men who humbly sought Jesus to worship Him and to bring Him offerings were specially guided to Jesus and entered His presence.
So, only those who seek Jesus to worship Him and offer themselves to Him will find Him and enjoy His presence.
