The music of the New Testament period and of the early church was what is known today as chant or plainsong. Our familiar ideas of harmony and a musical scale were developed considerably later. The ancient hymns were very simple in content and were not normally metrical.Six of the ancient hymns became a standard part of communion services throughout the centuries. And they are still used by some churches today. These six hymns are the Kyrie, Gloria, Nicene Creed, Holy Holy Holy, Hosanna or Benedictus, and Lamb of God. These six hymns date at least as far back as the 4th century, and most of them probably date back to the 2nd century, if not earlier. The words to these ancient hymns are purely Scriptural and contain no references to Mary or to transubstantiation.-- The Kyrie“Kyrie” is Greek for LordLord, have mercy.Christ, have mercy.Lord, have mercy. The GloriaGlory to God on high. And on earth peace to men of good will.'We praise You.
